As pregnancy enters its late stages, especially near the due date, expectant mothers should remain vigilant for signs that labor may begin at any moment. To meet your baby calmly and confidently, first understand the signals labor sends, learn the signs preceding delivery, and prepare in advance to ensure your baby arrives safely and healthily. So, what exactly are the signs that labor is imminent?
These symptoms indicate labor is starting (Public Health Network)
I. Regular Contractions
1. What are regular contractions?
Regular contractions are the most crucial sign of active labor. False contractions are sporadic and brief, serving as preparation for true labor. Once regular contractions begin, they cause the cervix to dilate continuously, signaling imminent delivery.
2. Characteristics of Contractions
Uterine contractions occur rhythmically and intensify progressively. Initially, they may be mild and occur about every 10 minutes. As labor advances, contractions grow stronger and more frequent—typically every 3 to 5 minutes—with each contraction lasting longer, often 50 to 60 seconds. Most contractions start in the lower abdomen but radiate to the lower back.Contractions cause abdominal pain that intensifies in waves, signaling imminent labor. The sensation evolves from uncomfortable pressure to a tightening, pulling ache. Some women experience lower back pain. Bleeding (bloody show) often occurs during contractions.
3. What to Do When Contractions Start
Walking may worsen abdominal pain. Rest in bed, lie down, and practice deep breathing.Use pillows or a chair for support to find the most comfortable position for pain relief. Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that strain the abdominal muscles; light activities like walking are acceptable. It's best to have a family member present in case of sudden changes. If contractions are irregular or occur at long intervals despite becoming regular, delivery is still some time away. You can rest at home and go to the hospital when contractions occur at least every 10 minutes.
4. Situations Requiring Attention
Pre-labor contractions progress from irregular false contractions to regular ones. Expectant mothers should distinguish between true and false contractions and prepare accordingly based on the interval between contractions.
II. Bloody Show
1. What is Bloody Show?
During pregnancy, a thick, bloody mucus plug seals the cervix. As labor approaches, uterine contractions cause dilation and the baby's head begins descending into the pelvis. The gradual separation and friction between the amniotic sac and uterine wall can rupture blood vessels, leading to bleeding. The discharge of this blood along with the expelled mucus plug is commonly known as "bloody show."
2. Characteristics of Bloody Show
The color of bloody show typically ranges from tea-brown to pink or bright red.The volume is usually less than a menstrual period. It is mixed with mucus and has a sticky consistency. Bloody show most commonly occurs within 24 hours before labor pains begin. However, individual variations exist; some women experience it up to a week or more before delivery.
3. What to Do When Bloody Show Occurs
If only faint streaks of blood appear in small amounts, the expectant mother can stay home and monitor the situation.Avoid excessive exertion and strenuous exercise. If contractions or water breaking accompany the bleeding, go to the hospital immediately with a family member. An ambulance is usually unnecessary.
4. Situations Requiring Attention
Bleeding caused by placental abruption (ruptured blood vessels) is extremely dangerous and requires immediate hospital care. Seek urgent medical attention if bleeding exceeds menstrual flow volume, is gushing, or appears bright red.
5. Water Breaking
1. What is Water Breaking?
Near the end of pregnancy, the amniotic sac surrounding the fetus ruptures, releasing amniotic fluid through the vagina.III. Rupture of Membranes 1. What is Rupture of Membranes? Near delivery, the amniotic sac surrounding the fetus ruptures, causing amniotic fluid to flow out through the vagina. 2. Characteristics of Rupture The fluid is clear and colorless, possibly containing floating substances like vernix. You feel warm fluid flowing out of the vagina. It is involuntary—unlike urine, you cannot control the flow. The leakage is continuous. 3. What to Do After Rupture of Membranes Regardless of location, lie down immediately to minimize fluid loss. Use sanitary pads for absorption; clean underwear and sanitary pads are essential. Rupture may lead to intrauterine infection, so seek immediate medical attention.Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise near term, and minimize squatting to prevent abdominal trauma. 4. Critical Considerations Massive amniotic fluid loss may cause umbilical cord prolapse due to pressure or gravity. Cord prolapse risks fetal hypoxia, tissue necrosis, or even death. If labor does not progress within 6 to 12 hours after rupture of membranes, doctors will administer oxytocin to induce labor and prevent bacterial infection.
