Stress brings not only anxiety and fatigue but also unexpected physical discomfort. The renowned American health advisory website "Rodale" recently summarized these effects. If you experience the following symptoms, your body may be signaling the need to reduce stress:
Vomiting. Stress often accompanies anxiety, potentially triggering dry heaving, vomiting, or a condition called "cyclic vomiting syndrome." This disorder involves recurrent episodes of severe nausea and vomiting lasting from hours to days, typically beginning at the same time each day.
Hair loss.There are two types of stress-induced hair loss. One is alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder where white blood cells attack hair follicles, leading to hair loss. The other is telogen effluvium, which can have more extreme consequences, characterized by sudden loss of over 70% of hair. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that people often struggle to connect this condition with stress because hair loss typically occurs months after a stressful event, such as the loss of a loved one.Once the stressful event concludes, hair loss typically improves. Nosebleeds. Research indicates that in certain situations, individuals may experience nosebleeds due to high stress levels. A 2001 study published in the British Medical Journal suggested nosebleeds are linked to sudden spikes in blood pressure, which are more common during stressful situations.
Forgetfulness. If you find yourself struggling to recall details from a recent meeting, you may be experiencing hippocampal atrophy. Chronic, ongoing stress damages the hippocampus—the brain region responsible for short-term memory—while excessive cortisol levels suppress memory function.
Frequent colds. Stress weakens immune function, lowering resistance and making individuals more susceptible to colds. This occurs because stress triggers sustained adrenaline release, which interferes with the adrenal glands' role in regulating the immune system. Additionally, stress causes the thymus gland to shrink and damages the function of telomeres—genes that aid in the proliferation of immune cells. One of the best ways to manage this type of stress is through physical exercise.
Excessive sweating. Stress can trigger hyperhidrosis, particularly in the palms and feet. Yoga and meditation may help alleviate this type of sweating. If you suspect hyperhidrosis, seek medical advice promptly. Research indicates that sweat produced under stress releases chemical signals that alert others to your stress.
