Typically, after conception, the corpus luteum in the ovaries secretes large amounts of estrogen and progesterone to support embryo implantation and development. After 12 weeks, the placenta forms and gradually replaces the corpus luteum, continuing to produce significant levels of both hormones. This maintains a state of high estrogen and progesterone throughout pregnancy.Consequently, estrogen- and progesterone-dependent cells undergo significant changes: vulvar tissue softens and moistens, vaginal epithelium thickens, blood vessels dilate, exudate and shedding cells increase, the cervix enlarges, softens, and becomes engorged, while glandular secretion intensifies. Cervical gland secretions mix with vaginal exudate and shedding cells to form vaginal discharge, which is continuously expelled throughout pregnancy.
However, women should be aware that unusually heavy discharge with a bloody, yellow, or discolored appearance, accompanied by odor and vulvar itching, may indicate a bacterial infection of the reproductive tract, such as vaginitis or other gynecological inflammations. During pregnancy, abnormal discharge is most commonly caused by vaginitis due to trichomoniasis or candidiasis (yeast infection).
