During menstruation, a woman's body is at its most vulnerable. The shedding of the uterine lining carries away numerous bodily cells. Washing hair at this time makes one susceptible to wind-cold invasion, potentially leading to colds.
1. Western medicine finds no scientific basis for prohibiting hair washing during menstruation, but traditional Chinese medicine holds a different view. TCM considers the head the summit of the six yang meridians, while the uterus marks the origin of the Ren meridian. During menstruation, blood circulation is already impaired. Washing hair diverts blood flow to the head, disrupting uterine circulation. This hinders the complete expulsion of uterine blood, potentially reducing menstrual flow or causing cramps.Additionally, hair follicles open during washing. Exposure to cold drafts at this time—especially when washing at night or before bed—can easily cause headaches.
3. Nighttime is associated with yin energy, while the head represents the primary yang point. This yin-yang imbalance can intensify headaches. Going to bed with damp hair, when the body's resistance and metabolism are low, invites various health issues.
4. Scientific research also indicates that washing hair during menstruation can stimulate cranial nerves, triggering uterine contractions. These contractions disrupt hormonal secretion patterns. Over time, this imbalance may contribute to cellular mutations, increasing the risk of gynecological cancers such as breast or uterine cancer.
5. During menstruation, a woman's body resistance is weaker than usual, making proper care essential. Neglecting this can adversely affect health. Therefore, it's best for women to avoid washing their hair during their period. If unavoidable, washing should not occur during the first three days. Use warm water, not cold.
