Feeling dizzy after just a few bus stops? Nauseous from the rocking motion on a boat? The mere thought of travel brings distress. Reports suggest these simple methods can help alleviate discomfort during motion sickness.
Focus on a stationary object outside the vehicle. This works well for mild dizziness and nausea. If your eyes fixate on objects inside the vehicle, your brain receives signals that "nothing is moving," causing your inner ear and brain to become out of sync, leading to dizziness. Instead, focus on a fixed point outside the vehicle (such as a distant building). This helps synchronize your inner ear and brain, alleviating dizziness.
Press your wrist. If you feel stomach discomfort or nausea, press the area 5 centimeters below the crease on the inner side of your wrist with your thumb for a few minutes to reduce symptoms.
Chew ginger. Ginger's pungent flavor suppresses nausea and vomiting. Take 1000–2000 mg of ginger supplements or chew a small piece of ginger one hour before travel. Note: Ginger thins the blood, so consult your doctor first if taking blood pressure medication.
