The Serious Risks of Skipping Breakfast

As society evolves and lifestyles change, more people stay up late and live irregularly. Young adults especially tend to linger in bed, sleeping in. On weekdays, they rush out after waking, grabbing only a cup of milk (or yogurt/soy milk) and an egg before heading to work. By noon, they're famished. Many even experience low blood sugar due to overly simple breakfasts.Among my friends, this practice is quite common. Some even believe their breakfast is substantial—eggs and milk provide ample protein. But is such a breakfast nutritionally complete?Where does it go wrong?
Lack of staple foods leads to insufficient brain fuel
Eggs and milk contain very little carbohydrates, yet carbohydrates are the sole energy source for maintaining normal brain, nerve, red blood cell, and lung tissue function. Staple foods break down into glucose in the body, which is absorbed and helps stabilize blood sugar levels. When breakfast lacks staple foods, blood sugar levels drop. Brain tissue may suffer impaired cell function due to energy deprivation, leading to dysfunction and symptoms of hypoglycemia like dizziness, palpitations, cold sweats, or even fainting. Many people may recognize this experience: if breakfast lacks sufficient nutrition, especially carbohydrates, by lunchtime one may feel not only hungry but also dizzy, fatigued, or even anxious. This is actually the brain signaling a "work stoppage," urging you to replenish energy by eating rice. Therefore, to ensure morning productivity, breakfast must include adequate carbohydrate intake.
Some parents, concerned about their children's academic workload, go out of their way to supplement their protein intake. However, it's important to understand that while the brain requires protein and fats, glucose is the essential nutrient it needs to function properly. Therefore, breakfast must include an adequate amount of staple foods like porridge, steamed buns, bread, or dumplings.
Protein Consumption
Dietary carbohydrates represent the most economical and primary energy source for humans. Staple foods are rich in carbohydrates, which are closely linked to the normal metabolism of certain nutrients in the body. Adequate carbohydrate intake conserves the body's protein and other metabolites from being used as energy sources, thereby increasing nitrogen retention. If staple food intake is insufficient, inadequate carbohydrate supply leads to lowered blood sugar. The body then taps into stored fat reserves, and even protein, to meet energy demands. This triggers gluconeogenesis through amino acids to produce glucose, causing excessive breakdown of tissue proteins and resulting in a negative nitrogen balance. If dietary protein supply is also insufficient, the body will consume its own tissue proteins, posing risks to health. For the human body, protein is not the primary source of energy. Therefore, to fully leverage the roles of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, breakfast should include a certain amount of staple foods.
Inducing Ketoacidosis
Insufficient staple food intake prevents energy acquisition through glucose oxidation. The body then mobilizes fat for energy, leading to extensive fatty acid oxidation. The resulting ketone bodies exceed the utilization capacity of extrahepatic tissues, causing their accumulation in the blood and potentially forming ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis severely damages organs, particularly the kidneys, and severe cases can cause organic lesions. This is especially pronounced in diabetic patients. Diabetics often require strict carbohydrate control, but low intake not only increases risk of hypoglycemia but also heightens danger of ketoacidosis. Therefore, breakfast must include adequate carbohydrates.
Thus, breakfast should never be rushed or neglected. Rising a little earlier to prepare a healthy, nutritious meal will energize you to greet the new day with enthusiasm and confidence.
The above briefly outlines the serious consequences of skipping breakfast. We hope this information proves helpful and wish you a pleasant day.
