First, touch your face and look in the mirror. If it feels dry, your skin needs hydration after cleansing. If it feels oily, remember to control excess oil after washing.
Always use lukewarm or cold water for cleansing—never hot water. Before starting, wash your hands thoroughly, then splash your face with lukewarm water.
Whether using soap, cleanser, or gel, lather it up in your hands first. (Foam-free cleansers are also popular—don't stress if yours doesn't lather.) Apply the foam or cleanser evenly across your face. Using gentle, circular motions, massage or press your skin with light, relaxed strokes.
Rinse your face thoroughly with water several times until all cleanser residue is completely removed. After ensuring your face is clean, it's best to pat your face with cold water.
Gently press a towel against your face to absorb excess water. Avoid rubbing your face like wiping a table; instead, press the towel against your skin to draw out moisture.
If you wear contact lenses, insert them first.
If your face feels dry upon waking, pat it with a moisturizing toner. If it feels oily, use an astringent toner. If only the T-zone is oily, apply moisturizing toner to the cheeks first, then astringent toner to the T-zone.
If you'll be indoors with air conditioning all day, remember to apply a highly moisturizing serum. For brightening needs, use a lightweight brightening essence. If spending extended time outdoors, always apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 but no higher than 30. For those not wearing makeup, you're ready to go—just remember to use an umbrella or wear a hat to protect against UV damage.
