Premature Twin Boy's Stomach Bubble as Large as a Fist (Public Health Network)
Ms. Li from Dali County, Weinan, gave birth prematurely to twin sons half a month ago. The younger son suffered from abdominal distension and incessant crying. Examination revealed congenital gastric wall malformation with a stomach bubble as large as a fist.Reporters learned yesterday that the Pediatric Surgery Department at Northwest Women and Children's Hospital has successfully performed surgery on this premature infant.
Xu Quan, Director of Pediatric Surgery at Northwest Women and Children's Hospital, explained that the infant suffered from congenital malformations of the gastric wall and digestive tract. Extensive muscle layer defects and gas bubbles in the stomach caused upper gastrointestinal obstruction. Additionally, a bubble the size of a fist had formed on the stomach wall, posing a life-threatening risk if it ruptured.Given the extreme rarity of this clinical case and the infant's premature birth with poor vital signs, the surgery posed immense risks and challenges. However, without immediate intervention, the child's life remained in constant jeopardy. Doctors performed gastric reduction and decompression along with pyloric reconstruction, achieving a successful outcome. Postoperatively, the infant's vital signs have gradually stabilized, and the patient remains under observation and treatment in the intensive care unit.
