Etiology The mechanisms triggering labor onset remain incompletely understood, leaving many aspects of preterm birth causation unexplained.Analysis of clinical cases indicates that the majority of preterm births result from: ① Gestational hypertension syndrome; ② Premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption, or placenta previa; ③ Multiple gestation or polyhydramnios; ④ Chronic diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease, nephritis, liver disease, diabetes, severe pulmonary tuberculosis, endocrine disorders (e.g., habitual preterm labor), or malnutrition;⑤ Anemia and severe hemolytic diseases; ⑥ Acute infectious diseases with high fever; ⑦ Uterine tumors, endometritis, and cervical incompetence; ⑧ Pelvic and spinal deformities; twin pregnancies or fetal malformations; premature rupture of membranes, umbilical cord abnormalities, and polyhydramnios are fetal factors.⑨ Acute or chronic poisoning; ⑩ Severe emotional stress or overexertion; ⑾ Accidental injury or surgery. In a small proportion of cases, no clear cause is identified.
Daily Care Considerations for Preterm Infants
Enhanced Feeding Support. Preterm babies require adequate nutrition to achieve normal growth and development. Breast milk is easily digestible and nutritionally balanced; preterm infants with sucking ability should be breastfed as early as possible.Many mothers of preemies cannot provide the first feed or stay with their babies. In such cases, mothers can express their milk for family members to deliver to healthcare professionals for feeding. If breastfeeding is impossible or insufficient, use specialized preterm infant formula. Mothers should closely monitor the baby, frequently check their temperature, and strive to maintain it between 36°C and 37°C (97°F and 98.6°F). For babies with hypothermia or weighing less than 2 kilograms, they should be placed in an incubator immediately.

Creating a quiet, comfortable environment is crucial. Since premature infants have underdeveloped visual and auditory systems, they prefer dim lighting and quiet surroundings. Minimize exposure to loud sounds and bright lights; avoid direct light shining into the baby's eyes to prevent retinal damage.

Parents must remember that a premature infant's mental development should be assessed using corrected age (Corrected Age = Birth Age in Months - (40 - Gestational Age at Birth) / 4)For example: A baby born at only 32 weeks gestation who is now 3 months old has a corrected age of 3 - (40 - 32) / 4 = 1 month. At this stage, the child's height, weight, and head circumference can be compared to the growth charts for a 1-month-old full-term infant. Corrected age is used until the child reaches 24 months (2 years).
British physicians believe that supplementing premature infants with salt significantly benefits both physical and cognitive development, with these advantages persisting into the teenage years.
Generally, infants born 8 weeks or more prematurely lose more sodium in their urine compared to full-term babies. Consequently, supplementing premature infants with salt during the first two weeks has become standard hospital practice.They conducted a 13-year follow-up study on two groups of premature infants.
