As an essential step in daily hair care, washing your hair is something most people are familiar with. With busy workdays, many prefer washing their hair at night or in the morning before heading out. So, is it better to wash your hair in the morning or at night? Let's explore below.
1. The optimal time to wash your hair is 9 PM
Because the period from 10 PM to 2 AM is when scalp cells regenerate and are most active. Washing your scalp before this time promotes cell regeneration. In fact, the period from 1 PM to 10 PM is generally suitable for washing your hair. The least suitable time is after 10 PM until morning, as this is when the scalp relaxes and rests, making it unsuitable for excessive stimulation.
2. Always blow-dry hair before bed. Sleeping with wet hair carries numerous risks: increased susceptibility to colds, damaged cuticles, heightened hair loss, and deteriorated hair quality. Ensure hair is at least 90% dry before sleeping to minimize cuticle damage and maintain long-term smoothness.
3. Avoid combing wet hair
After washing, hair cuticles remain open. Excessive combing at this stage causes significant damage, leading to frizziness once hair dries.
4. Avoid scratching your scalp with fingernails
Refrain from scratching your scalp with fingernails during washing. While satisfying, this can damage the scalp. Instead, gently massage the scalp using your fingertips.
5. Never apply shampoo directly to your head
Always dispense shampoo into your palms first, lather thoroughly, then apply to hair.Direct application to the scalp can leave chemical residue and impede effective cleansing (as it hinders lather formation).
6. Maintain water temperature around 40°C (104°F)
Cold water is most irritating to the scalp and may contribute to hair loss! Excessively hot water can damage hair follicles. The optimal temperature is approximately 40°C (104°F)—slightly warmer than body temperature.
7. Less frequent washing is better
If your hair isn't naturally oily, avoid daily washing. Washing causes hair cuticles to open, and the process of reclosing them inevitably causes some damage. Daily washing is detrimental to hair health. However, those with excessively oily hair may wash daily, as maintaining cleanliness outweighs the minor damage to cuticles.
8. Tilt your head slightly downward when washing
When showering, many stand upright, but the force of the water stream may cause more hair loss at the crown than elsewhere. A better approach is to lower your head to heart level. This reduces impact on the hair and promotes scalp blood circulation.
9. Silicone-free shampoo
If your hair feels greasy, heavy, or never seems fully clean, consider switching to a silicone-free shampoo. These formulas offer stronger cleansing power and leave hair feeling fresher afterward.
10. Always towel-dry hair after washing
Many people let their hair air-dry after washing, but this isn't ideal. After washing, hair cuticles lie open—a vulnerable state where dust, bacteria, and grime can easily penetrate. Therefore, it's best to towel-dry hair to about 60-70% dryness. This promotes cuticle closure, helping minimize damage from frequent shampooing.
