As toddlers gain increasing self-care abilities, parents should balance fostering independence with ensuring safety and hygiene in daily routines. Clothing should be loose, warm, lightweight, and easy for movement, with bright colors. Children prefer vivid hues, and these colors make them more visible to drivers, helping prevent traffic accidents.By the late toddler stage, most children can dress and undress themselves. Clothing should be simple and easy to put on and take off. Shoes should be comfortable with flat, soft, thick soles to protect their feet.
Daily Care Considerations for Toddlers (Public Health Network)
Toddlers' sleep duration decreases with age. Younger toddlers may sleep 12 hours at night and take a 2-hour nap during the day. Once sleep routines are established, avoid arbitrary changes. Many children require companionship before bedtime or prefer bringing a favorite toy to bed for security. Avoid reading suspenseful stories or engaging in vigorous play before sleep. Oral care should begin during early childhood. Start by gently wiping teeth with a soft cloth, gradually transitioning to a soft-bristled toothbrush. By age 3, children should be able to brush independently under parental supervision. To protect teeth, limit consumption of cavity-prone foods like candy. Some children habitually fall asleep with a bottle of milk or juice, which severely damages teeth. This habit should be eliminated or replaced with a cup of plain water. Healthcare providers should also advise parents to bring children for regular dental checkups.Between 18 and 24 months, children begin to gain voluntary control over their anal and urinary sphincters. Cognitive development also allows them to understand appropriate times and places for elimination. At this stage, children are often eager to learn toilet control to please their parents, creating both physiological and psychological readiness for potty training. Bowel training is typically mastered before bladder training, as bowel movements are more regular and children feel the urge more strongly.Nighttime elimination training typically isn't completed until ages 4–5. Throughout potty training, parents should emphasize praise and encouragement, avoiding disappointment or blame when accidents occur. Children who have established elimination routines may exhibit regression behaviors during sudden environmental changes; these habits usually resume once the child's emotions stabilize.
