As the weather turns colder, children are increasingly drawn to cozy beds during winter break—enjoying air-conditioned homes, eating cake, and watching cartoons. Yet many parents express concerns: How can children smoothly transition back to school after a break filled with play? Today, we invited kindergarten principals to share their insights.【On Routines】
Maintain consistency with kindergarten schedules
Parents should use the kindergarten's daily routine as a reference for their child's home schedule. Aim to align key habits—such as three meals and two snacks daily, avoiding oversleeping in the morning, and taking afternoon naps—as closely as possible with the kindergarten's practices.
Parents should consistently model good behavior in front of their children and maintain the established routine without giving up halfway. Provide a supportive living environment, ensure adequate sleep, and offer timely rewards or praise. Encourage children to complete tasks independently whenever possible.
【Playtime】
Alternate activities by age group for learning
Play is a vital activity for preschoolers. At home, structure playtime by alternating between active and quiet activities, as well as indoor and outdoor play.Schedule 1-2 learning activities each morning, such as reading books, drawing, or listening to stories. Include one play activity like doll play, building blocks, or various toys. Incorporate one physical activity like ball bouncing, jump rope, running, or riding a tricycle. For 3-4 year olds (younger class), each session should last about 20 minutes; for 5-6 year olds (middle class), about 30 minutes.
After afternoon nap, schedule one learning activity, one play activity, and one physical activity (same as kindergarten schedule). Allow approximately 30 minutes of TV viewing in both the morning and afternoon. On sunny, windless days, prioritize outdoor physical activities to expose children to fresh air and stimulate their respiratory systems with cool air, effectively boosting immunity.【Shaping the Environment】
Manage Routines: Take Your Child on "Adventures" During Spring Festival
Beyond ensuring adequate rest and play, parents should create a positive winter break environment. Monitor screen time (TV/computer) to no more than 2 hours daily. Cultivate healthy habits by establishing a structured schedule with early bedtimes and wake-up times—avoid letting your child become a "little lazybones" who stays in bed too long.
Moreover, take your child outdoors during the Spring Festival to immerse them in the festive atmosphere. Document memorable moments—fun activities at home, special achievements, or travel experiences—through words and photos. Bring these to kindergarten after the break and encourage your child to share them with classmates, fostering language skills and building bold, confident character traits.
【Safety First】
Ensuring a safe and joyful holiday requires essential safety education and precautions.
Children must never be out of sight. First, avoid leaving children home alone whenever possible and teach them self-protection skills. Second, children should always be accompanied by a parent or guardian when outdoors and never left unattended. During the holiday, instruct children not to set off fireworks and to stay clear of fireworks display areas.Strengthen family health education to cultivate good personal hygiene habits and prevent infectious diseases like hand-foot-and-mouth disease. Ensure children memorize an emergency contact number to dial immediately in case of accidents.
