People often use the term "big metal mouth" to describe those who've undergone orthodontic treatment, which is a major reason many adults hesitate to get braces. In reality, invisible aligners now offer a discreet solution for teeth straightening.
Invisible aligners first gained prominence in the United States in recent years. This technology differs significantly from traditional orthodontic methods. First, the dentist uses a computer to create a 3D reconstruction of the patient's teeth, analyzing which teeth require correction. Then, the computer adjusts the tooth positions. For example, if a tooth needs to move 2 millimeters, it can be done in 10 incremental steps. Each step moves the tooth 0.2 millimeters. Images are generated for each stage, and aligners are custom-made based on these images. Patients wear these aligners for correction. Made of plastic, these aligners are only a fraction of a millimeter thick. They apply gentle pressure to the teeth while being virtually invisible to others.Beyond aesthetics, its primary advantage is that patients can remove the aligners while eating. They can take them out during meals, clean their teeth thoroughly afterward, and reinsert them, minimizing impact on oral hygiene. After a period, patients return for a follow-up appointment. If the initial goal is achieved, the next step proceeds. Treatment typically takes 1 to 1.5 years, with costs ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 yuan.
Another option is fully invisible braces. These use metal orthodontic appliances bonded to the inner surfaces of teeth. By adjusting stainless steel brackets, wires, and other components based on tooth pressure points and load-bearing areas, they correct alignment. Since they're attached to the back of teeth, they appear virtually invisible. However, because they are positioned on the inner side of the teeth, the procedure is significantly more complex. Consequently, the treatment cost is approximately three times higher than standard options, ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 yuan. This method is suitable for patients with various types of tooth misalignment.
Besides invisible aligners, ceramic braces are another option. These are placed on the front surface of teeth. Compared to metal braces, they offer a more aesthetic appearance, utilize mature technology, and are relatively affordable. They typically cost 2,000 to 3,000 yuan more than traditional metal braces, averaging around 10,000 yuan.
Individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment must prioritize dental hygiene, ensuring teeth are cleaned after every meal. Following treatment completion, retainers must be worn for approximately 2 to 4 years, with some cases recommending lifelong use. However, retainers can be worn only at night, causing minimal disruption to daily life or appearance.
