As one of the vital reproductive organs and a significant symbol of masculinity, the penis's length profoundly impacts both physical and psychological development. So what constitutes a normal penis length for men? What consequences might a smaller penis bring? What should we do?
A normal adult penis measures 7-9 cm in flaccid state and approximately 11-16 cm when erect. If flaccid length is under 5 cm and erect length remains below 10 cm, it is classified as micropenis.
What causes micropenis?
Research by international sexual medicine experts indicates four primary causes:
Cause 1: Genetic Factors
Like other bodily organs, the size and shape of the penis are governed and influenced by genetic factors.
Cause 2: Developmental and Nutritional Conditions
>Generally, adult males with robust physiques and tall stature tend to have well-developed external genitalia, including larger penises and scrotums. Conversely, smaller stature may correlate with smaller penises. However, it's important to note that penis size does not correlate directly with height. It is common to encounter men under 1.60 meters tall whose penises can reach over 18 centimeters when erect.
Reason 3: Penile Size and Obesity
Men with prominent abdominal, pubic symphysis, or perineal fat deposits often exhibit underdeveloped penises that appear relatively small compared to average. Indeed, such a small penis relative to an enlarged body may cause difficulties and dissatisfaction in marital sexual relations.
Cause 4: Penile shortness may also stem from other factors
Conditions like endocrine disorders, insufficient male hormone levels, testicular atrophy, or penile retraction caused by scrotal swelling can all contribute to penile shortness.
What specific harms does penile shortness entail?
Physiological harm: Penile shortness is a relatively common congenital abnormality where penile development lags behind peers.Penile hypoplasia may also affect the development of other organs, often accompanied by poor testicular development, phimosis, and may lead to a series of male diseases such as prostatitis.
Psychological harm: It causes shame for many men. Adolescents with penile hypoplasia often experience feelings of inferiority and depression. Patients may avoid using public restrooms, and psychological pressure can lead to personality suppression, severe mental and physical illnesses such as sexual inferiority and frigidity.
Family Dynamics: A small penis can disrupt sexual harmony, failing to satisfy female partners and potentially causing marital breakdown. Beyond affecting sexual quality, excessive foreskin may introduce pathogens into the female reproductive tract, increasing her risk of gynecological infections.
Associated Organ Development: Micropenis is a common congenital abnormality defined as a penis length two standard deviations below the mean for age. This condition is associated with insufficient testosterone levels, resulting from inadequate development of hormone-targeted organs. It is often accompanied by poor testicular development and undescended testes. Currently, the primary clinical treatment for micropenis is surgery, which achieves two objectives: lengthening the penis and increasing its girth. Post-surgery, the shortened penis typically gains 2-4 centimeters in length. For patients with micropenis and erectile dysfunction, silicone implants can be inserted between the two corpora cavernosa to increase both length and girth. This method offers relatively simple and safe surgery, though some patients may experience a foreign body sensation post-operatively.
A non-surgical approach for micropenis involves fat grafting. This technique applies negative pressure traction to the penis, enhancing arterial blood supply to the corpus cavernosum. This causes the cavernous tissue to engorge while restricting venous outflow, leading to gradual penile enlargement. This approach requires normal endocrine function, particularly within the normal range for serum testosterone levels. It represents an ideal non-surgical cosmetic method combining physical and psychological treatment without interfering with endocrine function.
