Medicated baths involve dissolving medicinal herbs in water or decocting them before straining out the residue, then using the liquid for full-body or localized immersion. Their primary functions include promoting blood circulation, improving metabolic processes, enhancing transdermal absorption of medications, cleansing the skin, and reducing inflammation and itching.Herbal baths must be conducted under medical supervision. The following methods are for reference only. Common herbal baths for treating psoriasis include:
Tar Bath
Tar Bath: Prepare a tincture using pine distillate oil, potassium soap, and alcohol. Apply to affected skin areas, allow to dry, then take a full-body water bath.Ensure adequate ventilation during tar baths. Regular urine tests are required for long-term treatment.
Bran Bath
Place 1–2 kg of wheat bran, rice bran, or grain bran in a cloth bag. Boil with 5–10 liters of water for approximately 30 minutes. Adjust water temperature with additional water before taking a full-body bath.
Starch Bath
Starch Bath: Mix 0.5–1 kg of starch with sufficient water to form a paste. Place in a bathtub, add appropriate water volume, and use for a full-body bath.
Chinese Herbal Medicinal Bath
Decoct prescribed topical herbal bath ingredients for full-body or localized washing. Common formulas include:
1.100g Thuja orientalis leaves, 25g Gleditsia sinensis pods, 50g Eucommia ulmoides seeds. Add sufficient water, decoct, and use the liquid for a full-body bath.
2. Eucommia leaf bath: 250–500g Eucommia ulmoides leaves. Add 5–10 liters of water, decoct, and use for a full-body bath.
3.Four-Ingredient Lycium Root Bark Wash: 30g each of Lycium root bark and calcined alum, 150g old locust branches, 10g Sichuan pepper. Add sufficient water for a localized bath.
Precautions for Medicinal Baths:
1. Ensure the bath temperature is appropriate, around 35–37°C (95–98°F). Avoid excessively hot water to prevent skin burns.
2. Control the duration of the bath, generally 20–60 minutes being appropriate.
3. Use a soft cloth or towel to wipe during bathing; avoid using brushes or vigorous scrubbing.
4. After a full-body or large-area herbal bath, ensure proper clothing to stay warm and avoid catching a cold.
5.Individuals with cardiovascular insufficiency, uncompensated hypertension, kidney disease, or severe pulmonary conditions should not undergo full-body baths. Elderly or frail individuals should exercise caution when using medicinal baths.
6. If skin irritation occurs during the bath, discontinue immediately and seek prompt medical attention.
7. Always consult a physician before using medicinal baths. Avoid self-administration to prevent exacerbating conditions with unsuitable formulations.
