How to Quickly Prepare a Nutritious and Balanced Breakfast
First, consider how to assemble your breakfast. China's vast geography means diverse living environments and dietary habits. Yet, the fundamentals remain consistent.The Chinese tradition centers on grain-based foods to supply the substantial carbohydrates needed for breakfast. This is especially crucial for office workers who rely on mental agility—adequate carbohydrates fuel the brain, ensuring sharp thinking and efficient performance throughout the morning. Common staple choices include noodles or rice. Beyond carbohydrates, protein and fats are equally essential.If you choose stuffed foods as your staple, the filling should ideally combine meat and vegetables. When eating plain rice or unstuffed grain products, pair them with meat or soy products, along with vegetables, to ensure adequate protein, fat, and dietary fiber.
Second, determine the most time-consuming step in your breakfast routine based on your meal choices, and tackle it first thing in the morning. There are typically two approaches: the first involves preparing some or all steps the night before—or even days ahead—and completing the final cooking step in the morning.For instance, when preparing breakfast noodle dishes like wontons, dumplings, steamed buns, or mantou, you can complete most steps over the weekend or while watching TV at night. Freeze them overnight, then simply reheat and finish cooking in the morning.The second approach involves starting the heating process immediately after the alarm goes off. While heating, you can wash up. If using appliances with timer functions, you might even squeeze in a quick nap.
Finally, let's discuss cooking methods. Mornings are hectic, so complex, time-consuming recipes requiring constant supervision are poor choices. Opt for steaming, boiling, blanching, or stir-frying instead. This allows you to use the cooking time for essential pre-departure tasks like washing up or using the restroom.Using appliances with timers further ensures meals won't overcook. For steamed dishes, prep ingredients like cleaning and marinating the night before. Rinse rice thoroughly and fill the steamer with water ahead of time. This way, pressing a button in the morning lets you tackle other tasks efficiently. Common balanced breakfast combinations include:
1. Congee + side dish (mixed greens and tofu products) + grain/starch item
2. Steamed stuffed grain/starch item + congee or soup + mixed side dish
3. Boiled stuffed grain/starch item (noodles/vermicelli) + mixed side dish
4.Steamed vegetables (meat and vegetables combined) + mixed vegetables + staple food (dry/congee/rice/wheat products)
Below is my recommended breakfast combination for today: Congee + mixed wood ear mushrooms + stuffed tofu
>Stuffed tofu: Prepare the meat filling the night before and refrigerate. In the morning, use the lower compartment of the rice cooker to simmer porridge while steaming the stuffed tofu in the upper compartment. The first task is to press the rice cooker button, then boil water for blanching the wood ear mushrooms. While waiting for the water to boil, I wash up.The wood ear mushrooms were soaked in cold water overnight. Once the water boils, blanch the mushrooms, then toss them with seasonings. Steaming takes the longest, but I use that time to freshen up and tidy the room without delay. By the time everyone else wakes up, breakfast is ready.
Stuffed Tofu Pockets are also quite simple to make:
1. Purchase ground meat or pre-ground mince. Add chopped scallions, Shaoxing wine (or cooking wine),light soy sauce, sugar, and Chinese five-spice powder for seasoning;
2. Slice the tofu puffs open and stuff them with the seasoned minced meat. Refrigerate in the chilled section;
3. Steam in a steamer for about 15 minutes. If using a rice cooker alongside rice, adjust the time based on the rice's cooking duration;
4. Finished product.
