Eyelash growth serums on the market primarily contain prostaglandin-based drugs (such as equine prostaglandin or latanoprost), minoxidil, growth peptides, etc.
Originally, ophthalmologists discovered prostaglandin drugs could promote eyelash growth while treating glaucoma. However, subsequent research revealed that prolonged use of these drugs can cause eyelid thickening and irritate the cornea, leading to corneal pain or even corneal ulcers. For instance, minoxidil can trigger eyelid inflammation and disrupt the normal structure and function of the ocular surface. The safety of growth peptides remains unconfirmed, and long-term use may similarly cause eyelid inflammation.
Therefore, unless experiencing eyelash loss, eyelash growth serums are not recommended. Long-term use can disrupt the local microenvironment of the ocular surface, causing unnecessary damage to the eyes.
