The primary effects of Xanthium seeds are dispersing wind-cold, clearing nasal passages, eliminating wind-dampness, relieving itching, and sterilizing. Therefore, they can be used to treat rhinitis. So, how does Xanthium seed treat rhinitis?
Method for Treating Rhinitis with Burdock Seeds:
First, take 30-40 burdock seeds, crush them, and place them in a pot. Add 50 grams of sesame oil or sesame seed oil, then simmer over low heat.
For use, soak a small amount of sterilized cotton in the oil. Insert it into the nasal cavity before bed each night, 2-3 times daily. One course lasts two weeks. To prevent nighttime breathing difficulties, alternate nostrils.
Since raw burdock seeds contain water-soluble glycosides with mild toxicity, it's best to use roasted seeds. Test with a small amount first; if no allergic reaction occurs, proceed as directed. Discontinue use immediately if redness or swelling develops, and seek medical attention for severe reactions.
Beyond the above methods, during rhinitis flare-ups, a small amount of ground Xanthium seeds can be blown into the nasal passages or inhaled as a powder, 3-6 grams daily. However, this method is unsuitable for children, the elderly, or those with chronic illnesses. Alternatively, apply egg white to the external nasal skin, then evenly sprinkle a small amount of ground Xanthium seeds over it. Apply externally each night before bed, wash off the next morning, once daily, to consolidate the effect.
Xanthium seeds effectively treat rhinitis because chronic rhinitis primarily stems from internal factors like lung, spleen, and kidney deficiency, while external triggers often involve wind-cold invasion or exposure to foreign substances and odors. Xanthium seeds possess the efficacy of "steaming the brain to stop nasal discharge," offering benefits such as inducing perspiration, dispelling wind-dampness, clearing nasal passages, andand alleviate pain. However, note that Xanthium seeds possess pungent and warm properties, which intensify after oil frying. They are clinically indicated for chronic rhinitis caused by external wind-cold invasion but are unsuitable for other patterns. Prolonged use requires vigilance against drug accumulation toxicity. Reports exist of a child developing acute tubulointerstitial nephritis due to excessive Xanthium seed intake. This led to acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. Symptoms of toxicity include: loss of appetite, excessive salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, frequent lying down, thirst, and in severe cases, mucosal jaundice.
