Swimming is arguably the most effortless, least restrictive, and least stressful weight-loss method with excellent results. Mastering swimming techniques is essential for those on a weight-loss journey. It also allows you to showcase your fit physique to non-swimmers and, if necessary, assist drowning victims—truly a skill with multiple benefits. So, what swimming techniques enhance your beauty?
Swimming Techniques:
I. Breaststroke: A mnemonic for breaststroke coordination precedes the key movements: "Paddle arms, legs still; pull arms, then pull legs; extend arms first, kick legs later; bring arms together, extend straight, float briefly."As the rhyme shows, arm movements precede leg movements. Always pull your legs in after pulling your arms, and kick after extending your arms.
Leg Movements:
1. Leg Pull: Bend your knees to pull your legs in, bringing your heels toward your buttocks. Keep your calves tucked behind your thighs as you slowly pull your legs in to minimize resistance.Upon completion, knees should be shoulder-width apart, calves perpendicular to the water surface, and feet near the surface.
3. Squeeze and Kick: This is essentially the process of straightening the legs (hip flexion, knee extension). Generate power simultaneously from the core and thighs, using the inner calves and feet to squeeze and kick the water. Begin by kicking outward, backward, and downward, then inward and upward, tracing a half-circle.The outward kick and inward squeeze are performed continuously—a combined kick-and-squeeze motion. Upon completing the kick-squeeze, legs are fully extended and together, feet turned inward with toes pointing toward each other. Avoid excessive force; accelerate gradually from slow to fast, achieving peak speed when legs are nearly fully extended and together.
4. Pause: After legs are straight and together, glide briefly (1-2 seconds).
Arm Action:
1. Outward Pull. Extend arms forward with palms tilted approximately 45 degrees (pinky fingers upward). Simultaneously pull arms outward and backward, then bend elbows to pull backward and downward.
2. Pull inward. Turn palms inward, accelerating the pull with forearms. Hands move upward and meet in front of the chest (hands high, elbows low, elbows below shoulders), then extend forward.
3. Extend forward. Extend both arms forward (elbows fully straight). Note: The pull outward is relaxed, the pull inward is forceful and accelerated, while the forward extension is proactive.
II. Freestyle swimming is a full-body exercise where every movement relies on coordinated whole-body action. While the stroke and kick generate propulsion, the torso's role is equally vital. First, maintain core tension—a limp midsection makes the body floppy like mud.Second, body rotation effectively harnesses the power of the torso's large muscle groups, reducing drag and enhancing efficiency.
Complete freestyle coordination patterns vary. The most common rhythm involves two strokes, six kicks, and one breath per cycle.
1. The hand enters the water between the shoulder's extension line and the body's midline, with the thumb leading in a diagonal entry.
2. After entry, the hand, elbow, and shoulder continue forward extension to fully straighten the arm. As the body rotates, the wrist and elbow flex, drawing the arm outward and backward to catch water. After reaching the lowest point, rotate the arm inward, upward, and backward, maintaining a high-elbow, bent-arm stroke position.
3. When the arm is perpendicular to the water surface, accelerate the push phase with the hand leading, transitioning the arm outward, upward, and backward through the water until it reaches the side of the thigh. Lift the elbow to exit the water.
4. After exiting the water, the arm naturally and relaxed glides forward through the air, maintaining a high elbow position. The hand then leads the entry in front of the shoulder, initiating the next cycle.
For most people, the breaststroke is the most fundamental swimming technique to learn. Of course, national athletes also master various artistic swimming styles. Mastering just one allows you to move through the water like a fish. Diligently practicing these movements for fitness and weight loss can also let you show off your artistic swimming poses—an irresistibly charming display.
