Causes of Drowning After Swimming
Drowning incidents occurring after swimming are often linked to water entering the lungs during the activity. Initially, this may not affect daily functions, but over time, lung function deteriorates significantly. Symptoms such as fatigue, coughing, sore throat, and difficulty breathing may emerge. This progression can lead to unusual behavior and ultimately death, often accompanied by foaming at the mouth. This is medically termed "dry drowning."
What is Dry Drowning?
Multiple theories exist regarding dry drowning. One suggests it occurs when cold water shock and extreme panic trigger reflexive laryngospasm and bronchospasm, leading to suffocation without fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Another theory suggests death occurs hours after surfacing, due to minimal water entering the lungs initially, with no immediate life-threatening danger apparent.
Who is Prone to Dry Drowning?
Certain groups are more susceptible, including: individuals with allergies, children under 5, those in poor physical condition, and people sensitive to thermal stress.
Beyond swimming, dry drowning can occur during medical procedures like surgical anesthesia or endoscopy.
Preventing Dry Drowning
Avoid sudden pushes into water, roughhousing in water, submerging peers, or pranking others underwater. Never allow children to dive recklessly.
When children are swimming, constantly monitor for any unusual signs in the water. Watch for breathing difficulties, lethargy (fatigue, excessive sleepiness compared to usual, difficulty waking up, sudden oxygen deprivation, possibly accompanied by coughing or sore throat), and abnormal behavior.
How to Administer First Aid for Dry Drowning
If a child is suspected of dry drowning, immediate first aid is essential.Perform CPR immediately. Unlike typical drowning cases, dry drowning does not require water expulsion. Instead, begin artificial respiration to open the airway, followed by chest compressions. If the victim has no pulse, initiate chest compressions first and transport them to medical care without delay to avoid missing the critical window for life-saving intervention.
