Peanuts, also known as groundnuts, are prized for their nourishing properties and longevity-promoting effects. They are commonly called "immortality nuts" in folk tradition and celebrated as "vegetarian meat."
Experts note that peanuts are sweet and neutral in nature, rich in nutrients, and possess multiple health benefits: strengthening the spleen, harmonizing the stomach, nourishing blood and stopping bleeding, moistening the lungs and relieving cough, promoting urination, and aiding lactation. They can lower cholesterol, prevent and treat atherosclerosis, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. Additionally, they help prevent and treat tumor-related diseases, making them a valuable herbal medicine.
Modern pharmacological research reveals that peanuts are rich in oils and fats, with a fat content as high as 45–50%, approximately 80% of which are unsaturated fatty acids. They are also abundant in protein, containing 25–30%, along with riboflavin, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, lecithin, choline, vitamin E, vitamin K, and B vitamins.Despite these benefits, consuming peanuts carries several precautions.
First, due to their high fat and protein content, individuals with cold-damp stagnation, spleen deficiency with loose stools, or gastrointestinal disorders should avoid peanuts, as they may exacerbate diarrhea.
Second, for those with liver or gallbladder conditions, peanuts can increase the burden on the liver.
Third, individuals with excessive sebum secretion or prone to acne should avoid excessive peanut consumption.
Fourth, due to peanuts' hemostatic properties that promote blood clotting and thrombus formation, those with high blood viscosity or existing blood clots should refrain from eating them.
Furthermore, peanuts are commonly consumed fried in daily diets, which can easily cause internal heat. This is particularly problematic for those with excessive liver fire or internal heat, as it may exacerbate symptoms. If you must eat peanuts, opt for boiled or stewed varieties instead. Prepared this way, peanuts are mild, easy to digest, and gentle on the stomach—the optimal method for healthful consumption.
