Recently, reports emerged that a 5-month-old female infant in Jiangsu developed symptoms including developmental delay, facial swelling, and excessive hair growth after using an antibacterial cream, sparking widespread concern. Many parents now question how to select skincare products for infants and young children.
First, parents should understand the characteristics of infant skin.
On one hand, their skin is exceptionally thin. Infant skin is only one-tenth as thick as adult skin, with a single-layer epidermis compared to adults' multi-layered structure. The stratum corneum is underdeveloped, and the dermis and connective tissue are thin. Newborn skin contains 74.5% water, while infants and toddlers have 69.4% moisture content. The dermis contains fewer collagen fibers, lacks elasticity, and is extremely delicate and sensitive, with limited resistance to dry environments.
On the other hand, melanin production is minimal. Infant skin produces very little melanin, resulting in a thin pigment layer that is easily damaged by ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Therefore, excessive exposure to strong sunlight should be avoided from infancy. When outdoors, exposed skin should be protected with non-irritating infant sunscreen products free of organic chemical sunscreens.Additionally, an infant's average skin surface area is 2,500 square centimeters, while their average weight is 5 kilograms—a ratio of 1:500. Consequently, they absorb proportionally more skincare products than adults and exhibit significantly stronger reactions to allergens or toxic substances. Simultaneously, their underdeveloped immune systems and weaker resistance make them more prone to skin allergies like erythema and papules.
Therefore, selecting moisturizers for babies requires not only careful attention but also specific considerations.
1. Choose baby-specific products. Baby-specific moisturizers have simpler, safer formulations than adult products.
2. Check ingredients. Exercise caution if an infant skincare product contains any of these three types of ingredients:Preservatives: Methylisothiazolinone, Methylparaben, Propylparaben—pose sensitization risks; Camphor—carries ingestion hazards; Ethanol, Hormones, Fragrances—absorbed through skin can harm infants. The first two are strictly prohibited, while the latter should be minimized.
3. Minimize alkaline products. Alkaline cleansers can damage the skin's protective barrier. If your child experiences redness, swelling, flaking, dryness, cracking, rashes, pain, or itching after using skincare products, seek medical attention promptly.
4. Don't blindly trust marketing claims. When selecting face creams for infants and toddlers, always purchase from reputable channels and manufacturers. Exercise caution with products claiming "special effects," "rapid results," or "zero additives."
Important reminder: If your infant or toddler's skin shows abnormalities that are difficult to assess or manage, seek prompt medical attention. Do not use steroid medications or products containing steroid ingredients without professional guidance.
