The eyes are the windows to the soul. Possessing beautiful eyes not only offers aesthetic pleasure but can significantly enhance your facial contours. The eyelids are a unique anatomical structure that protects the eyeball from injury, regulates light intake, and distributes tears evenly across the eye surface through blinking.Double eyelids, or upper eyelid folds, are commonly seen in Westerners, while 30% of Asians have monolids. The average height of the upper eyelid fold in Chinese individuals typically ranges from 4-6mm, with some as low as 2-3mm, appearing as hidden double eyelids.Double eyelid surgery, commonly known as blepharoplasty, can widen the palpebral fissure and expand the visual field post-operatively. It enhances a vibrant appearance, creating a refined, expressive gaze.
Indications:
Suitable candidates for double eyelid surgery include:
1. Individuals with large eyes and thin upper eyelid skin who have monolids.
2. Individuals with one single eyelid and one double eyelid, or uneven double eyelid width on both sides.
3. Those with internal double eyelids, where the crease is barely visible or disappears entirely when the eyes are open.
4. Individuals with sagging upper eyelid skin that presses on the eyelashes or partially obstructs the field of vision.
5. Individuals with aesthetically less desirable eye shapes, such as slanted eyes or asymmetrical eyes, which can be improved through double eyelid surgery.
Surgical Methods:
Since each person's eyelid structure and shape are unique, the surgical approach used to create double eyelids varies. Double eyelid surgery methods can be categorized into two types: suture method and incision method.
Suture Method:
This technique uses 6-0 nylon sutures to anchor the dermis to the tarsal plate or levator aponeurosis. Scar tissue formed from the surgical incision creates the double eyelid fold. Suitable for patients with thin upper eyelid tissue, long palpebral fissures, and younger age groups. Its advantages include simplicity, ease of execution, and rapid postoperative recovery. Disadvantages include the tendency for the double eyelid to fade over time, inability to remove excess skin, orbicularis oculi muscle, or orbital fat, and unsuitability for patients with thick upper eyelid tissue, significant orbital fat, or epicanthal folds.
Incision Method:
Involves making an incision at an appropriate location on the upper eyelid skin. Part of the orbicularis oculi muscle or orbital fat is removed, and the skin incision is sutured to the tarsal plate or the levator palpebrae superioris tendon. Its advantages include clear visualization of anatomical structures within the surgical field, enabling precise execution of procedures. It effectively removes excess skin, orbicularis oculi muscle, and orbital fat to create permanent, natural-looking double eyelids. Disadvantages include greater surgical complexity, slower postoperative recovery, and the requirement for highly skilled surgeons. It is suitable for patients of any age, including older individuals with lax upper eyelid skin and excessive orbital fat (covering both monolids and double eyelids with skin laxity).
Criteria for successful double eyelid surgery:
1. The double eyelid crease is moderately wide with a natural, smooth contour. The eyelid tissue from the crease to the lash line is thin and smooth, with near-perfect symmetry on both sides. The result is a natural, aesthetically pleasing appearance without obvious artificial traces. 2. The palpebral fissure is noticeably wider and larger than before surgery. The eyes appear deeper and more expressive, with a bright, lively gaze that conveys a sense of large, captivating eyes.
3. The procedure brings about a noticeable transformation to the overall appearance, enhancing facial beauty and adding radiance.
4. Both the surgeon, the patient, and observers expressed satisfaction. No complications or aftereffects were observed.
