Gastroenteritis patients are prone to flare-ups, experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. This condition is most prevalent in summer. The primary cause is consuming overly spoiled or rotten food. What foods should be avoided during gastroenteritis?
Foods to avoid during gastroenteritis:
1. Reduce or eliminate fried foods, pan-fried items, fatty meats, and cooking oils.
2. Limit sugary foods and those prone to fermentation: potatoes, sweet potatoes, white radish, pumpkin, milk, soybeans, etc.
3. Avoid raw, cold, hard, or spoiled foods. Refrain from alcohol and strongly spicy or irritating seasonings.
4. Do not consume moldy or rotten foods.
5. Opt for low-fat, low-fiber options. Foods high in oil or fat are not only difficult to digest but also have a laxative effect that can worsen diarrhea symptoms. Prioritize cooking methods like steaming, boiling, stewing, or braising. Dietary fiber promotes intestinal peristalsis and stimulates the intestinal wall, which is detrimental to diseased intestines and should therefore be restricted.High-fiber foods like leeks, celery, soybean sprouts, and onions should be avoided.
6. Limit gas-producing foods and sweets. During excessive flatulence or bowel sounds, reduce intake of sucrose and gas-producing foods such as soybeans, sweet potatoes, daikon radish, pumpkin, and yellow beans.
What to eat for gastroenteritis:
Consume light, easily digestible foods: Prepare meals finely chopped, soft, and well-cooked. Prioritize steaming, boiling, or stewing to minimize irritation to the gastric mucosa.
Increase intake of high-quality protein and fiber-rich foods. If anemia is present, appropriately increase consumption of iron-rich lean meats, organ meats, and dark-colored vegetables and fruits.
When stomach acid is excessive, consume milk, soy milk, bread, or alkaline steamed buns to neutralize it. For atrophic gastritis, where acid secretion is typically low, increase intake of concentrated meat broth, chicken soup, or tart fruit juices to stimulate gastric secretion and aid digestion.
