Before childbirth, many nearsighted expectant mothers frequently ask: Does severe myopia truly preclude vaginal delivery? What factors influence natural childbirth? How can nearsighted mothers achieve a vaginal birth?
From a purely medical perspective, myopia alone does not conclusively preclude vaginal delivery. In other words, while high myopia may somewhat influence vaginal delivery, there is no absolute correlation between myopia and the ability to deliver vaginally. The key factor for myopic mothers lies in whether the vitreous body and retina have undergone pathological changes. If such changes exist, external forces during labor may easily pull on the retina, leading to retinal detachment.
Three Factors Affecting Natural Birth
Uterine Contractions
Stronger contractions accelerate labor progression. Contractile strength is influenced by multiple factors including the mother's age, muscle tone and elasticity, and fetal weight.
Pelvic size
Conventional wisdom suggests that a larger pelvis increases the likelihood of natural childbirth. Medical theory also indicates that a mid-pelvic diameter of 9.8 cm or greater typically allows for uncomplicated delivery, while a diameter below 9.2 cm reduces the chances of natural birth. X-rays can be used to determine the mid-pelvic diameter. However, in real life, pelvic size isn't the sole determining factor. Sometimes, even with a sufficiently large pelvis, delivery difficulties may occur. Conversely, a smaller pelvis combined with a smaller fetus can result in a smooth delivery.
Many expectant mothers believe taller individuals have an easier time giving birth, assuming height is directly proportional to pelvic size. While height and pelvic size do correlate in most people, theoretically making natural birth easier, numerous factors influence delivery. Therefore, this assumption is incorrect—taller expectant mothers do not necessarily have an easier time giving birth than shorter ones.
Conversely, some expectant mothers assume that women with larger hip circumferences have larger pelvises. However, a larger hip circumference does not necessarily indicate a larger pelvis. Clinically, it is common to observe tall women with less spacious pelvic outlets, while shorter women may not necessarily have narrow pelvic outlets. Some women have more hip fat, not necessarily a larger pelvis. If the fetus is too large and the mother lacks sufficient abdominal muscle strength, the delivery process may not proceed smoothly. If the newborn weighs over 3.5 kg and the mother's pelvis is insufficiently large, a difficult delivery may occur.
Is natural birth related to myopia?
From a purely medical perspective, "myopia" alone is insufficient evidence to conclude that natural birth is impossible. In other words, while high myopia may somewhat affect natural birth, there is no absolute correlation between myopia and the ability to deliver vaginally. For nearsighted expectant mothers, the key to natural childbirth lies in whether the vitreous humor and retina have undergone pathological changes. If such changes occur, external forces during delivery may easily pull on the retina, leading to retinal detachment.
What should highly myopic expectant mothers do if they wish to pursue vaginal delivery?
1. Undergo Eye Examination
Before deciding on delivery methods, highly myopic expectant mothers should undergo comprehensive eye examinations to check for vitreous or retinal pathologies. If all findings are normal, they can select an appropriate delivery method based on their physical condition and medical advice.
2. Limit screen time
Prolonged exposure to electronic devices can cause retinal photoreceptor cell apoptosis. To ensure a smooth delivery, highly myopic expectant mothers should consciously reduce screen time to minimize the risk of retinal disorders.
3. Perform Eye Exercises
Regular, moderate eye exercises—such as blinking—can effectively stimulate the eyes, relieve eye strain, and reduce the risk of retinal detachment. Expectant mothers should routinely practice eye exercises or gaze at scenery outside windows.
4. Avoid Eye Drops
While eye drops can stimulate tear gland secretion and temporarily relieve dry eyes, their effects are short-lived. For expectant mothers with myopia, frequent use may actually diminish the tear glands' natural secretion function.
