Listening to music with headphones, long phone calls, karaoke sessions, all-night mahjong games, working late into the night... These are common lifestyle habits among many young and middle-aged people today. Combined with working in noisy environments, many unknowingly suffer severe hearing damage, even sudden deafness. March 3rd is National Ear Care Day.According to statistics from the Xiaoshan Disabled Persons' Federation, our district has approximately 5,000 individuals with hearing disabilities, with young and middle-aged adults constituting a significant proportion. The number of young and middle-aged deaf patients is increasing. Case 1: Xiao Xue, a 28-year-old from Sichuan, worked as an operator in a workshop at a chemical fiber enterprise in Guali. He labored for over five years amidst the constant roar of machinery.Recently, he noticed a severe decline in his hearing, struggling even to make out the TV. On March 2nd, during the 9th National Ear Care Day consultation and free medical examination event hosted by the Xiaoshan Disabled Persons' Federation, staff conducted tests and diagnosed him with sensorineural hearing loss, advising him to switch to a quieter job.He often plays mahjong and sings karaoke with friends. Recently, after spending a day and night playing mahjong with friends, he returned home to discover he could barely hear his family speaking. A hospital examination revealed sudden deafness.Recently, she suddenly noticed her hearing had deteriorated. Though her hearing tests remained within normal range, she was already at the threshold of deafness and needed to take precautions.
Unhealthy lifestyles are a primary cause of hearing loss.
Excessive noise, high mental stress, and poor habits are major culprits behind sudden deafness in young and middle-aged adults. Xu Pengyun, a hearing consultant at Xiaoshan Hui'er Hearing Service Center, categorizes the causes as follows:
Noise easily robs hearing, with factory workers being the most common victims.Xiaoshan has seen a surge in enterprises, with textile, apparel, and steel industries accounting for a significant portion. Production workshops in these sectors typically generate high noise levels. Workers exposed to such environments for extended periods without proper adjustments or rest are highly susceptible to sudden deafness.
Excessive mental stress is another primary cause of hearing loss.Historically, sudden deafness due to stress primarily affected those over 40, but it now extends to middle-aged and younger adults. Two peak age groups for competition-related ear disorders are middle/high school students and college students, alongside successful professionals aged 35-60. Their intense competitive drive often leads to chronic energy depletion. Prolonged tension and fatigue without adequate rest can trigger sudden deafness.
