Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese wellness practice. In summer, it has gained popularity for its ability to expel dampness from the body, prevent sub-health conditions, promote overall blood circulation, and alleviate various physical discomforts. Different body areas require distinct Gua Sha techniques.
What are the gua sha techniques?
1. Head Gua Sha Technique
Since the head is covered by hair, use the gua sha tool directly over the scalp without any lubricant. To enhance effectiveness, use the corner or edge of the tool. Scrape each area about 30 times until the skin feels warm.
2. Facial scraping technique
Facial scraping may affect appearance, so use gentle strokes and avoid inducing petechiae. No blood-activating agents are needed for facial scraping, and avoid large-area scraping. Move from the center outward following muscle direction, scraping once daily.
3. Neck scraping
Scrape the neck gently without excessive force. Use the edge of the scraping tool to scrape until a rash appears. The shoulder area has abundant muscles and can be scraped with slightly more pressure.
4. Back and Limb Gua Sha
Scrape the back from top to bottom, ideally moving from the center outward toward the sides. Maintain a gentle touch throughout; excessive force may damage the spine. When scraping the limbs, avoid applying pressure over joints. If lower limb edema or varicose veins are present, scrape upward from the lower extremities. Avoid areas with skin lesions, infections, or other abnormalities.
5. Scraping technique for the knee joint
Due to the complex structure of the knee joint, use the edge of the scraping tool to ensure proper scraping location and direction, preventing damage to the bone and joint.Perform scraping gently. Avoid scraping if knee joint effusion is present.
What are the benefits of gua sha?
1. Promotes Blood Circulation and Unblocks Meridians
Scraping hands and feet enhances blood flow and meridian circulation, alleviating cold extremities. When qi and blood stagnate or yang deficiency occurs, scraping palms can provide relief. After warming the palms, use the middle section of the scraping tool to scrape all four sides of the fingers, from the base to the tip, ten times in each direction. This promotes blood circulation and unblocks meridians.
2. Relieve Constipation
Gua Sha aids bowel movements. Chronic constipation impairs digestion and absorption while allowing toxins to accumulate in the body. Patients can scrape the abdomen from top to bottom. Those with organ prolapse should scrape upward to stimulate gastrointestinal motility and promote stool passage.
Important Note
While gua sha offers numerous benefits, prolonged use can damage spleen and stomach tissues. This not only fails to relieve fatigue but also burdens the body. Individuals with skin ulcers or lesions should avoid gua sha, as it may worsen their condition.
