The cost of porcelain veneers primarily depends on the materials used, which fall into two main categories: metal and non-metal.
Metal-based—
I. Non-precious metal alloys
Advantages: Non-precious porcelain-fused-to-metal alloys primarily consist of nickel and chromium. They feature high strength, affordability, and the ability to form a dense oxide layer.Another drawback is their grayish-black coloration, which becomes more noticeable with prolonged use.
Nickel-Chromium Alloy Crowns: Primarily composed of nickel and chromium.
Titanium Alloy Crowns: Contain lower titanium content, with nickel and chromium still dominating the composition. They are essentially indistinguishable from nickel-chromium alloy crowns.
Cobalt-Chromium Inner Crown Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: Cobalt content does not exceed 30%, requiring nickel addition to enhance malleability.
Pure Titanium Inner Crown Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: Titanium is an ideal metal for dental restorations, but porcelain chipping occurs frequently. Individuals with allergies may experience reactions to metals and can opt for pure titanium porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.Pure titanium is highly inert and does not cause allergic reactions.
II. Precious Metal Alloys
Advantages: Precious metal porcelain-fused-to-metal alloys primarily contain gold, palladium, platinum, etc. They are non-toxic, non-irritating, and rarely cause allergies. Additionally, the alloy's orange-yellow base color closely matches human gum tissue tones, eliminating grayish-black margins for a natural, aesthetic appearance.
Disadvantages: Higher cost. Pure gold alone lacks sufficient strength for porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, necessitating alloy formulations.
Silver-Palladium Alloy Crowns: Inner crowns containing over 50% silver.
Gold-Deposited Crowns: Inner crowns containing over 84% gold.
Non-Metal Options——
All-Ceramic Crowns: Being metal-free, all-ceramic crowns offer superior biocompatibility compared to metal-ceramic crowns. They are radiolucent (visible on X-rays), compatible with medical MRI scans, and resistant to plaque buildup. Both the inner and outer layers are ceramic. Without a metal inner crown, they exhibit excellent translucency, resulting in a more natural and lifelike appearance than metal-ceramic crowns. Therefore, they are highly suitable for anterior aesthetic restorations.
