Absolute bed rest is not required after medical abortion, but prolonged sitting should be avoided. Medical abortion has limitations and side effects, so it cannot be as simple as purchasing pills from a pharmacy. It must be performed at a licensed medical facility, followed by careful post-abortion care and recuperation. Certain precautions must be taken during this period to prevent infection and discomfort. Below are key considerations for post-medical abortion care.
1. After tissue expulsion, remain under hospital observation for one hour. If vaginal bleeding is minimal, you may return home to rest.
2. Rest appropriately for two weeks post-abortion. Consume nutritious foods and avoid heavy physical labor.
3. Maintain perineal hygiene. Avoid baths and sexual intercourse until vaginal bleeding has ceased.
4. During the first 2–3 days post-abortion, vaginal bleeding is typically equivalent to or slightly heavier than a menstrual period. Seek immediate medical attention if bleeding is excessive or persistent.
5. If tissue expulsion is not observed, monitor for two weeks after medication. Pay attention for any tissue discharge during urination or bowel movements. Submit urine samples weekly for pregnancy tests.
6. Some individuals may experience incomplete medical abortion, where residual fetal membrane tissue causes heavy bleeding. Immediate hospitalization for curettage is required.
7. Ovulation may resume quickly after abortion. Contraceptive measures should be taken to prevent another pregnancy.
