Abdominal liposuction is a popular choice for many overweight individuals seeking rapid weight loss. However, postoperative complications should not be underestimated. These complications are categorized into common and rare types. Below are six potential complications of abdominal liposuction and their prevention methods.
Complications of Abdominal Liposuction:
(1) Infection — Prevention Measures: a) Preoperative showering and skin cleansing (no shaving required in the perineal area); use povidone-iodine for effective disinfection; b) Strict aseptic technique during surgery; c) Perioperative antibiotic administration; d) Postoperative prevention of hematoma or seroma formation; e) Thorough disinfection of the wound during dressing changes.
(2) Superficial Skin Necrosis — Preventive Measures: a) Preserve 0.5–1 cm of subcutaneous fat to maintain the integrity of the subdermal vascular network; b) Prevent hematoma and infection after abdominal liposuction; c) Apply coupling agent between the ultrasound probe and skin during ultrasound, and continuously move the probe during brief skin contact.
(3) Hematoma – Prevention: a) Use cannulas no larger than 4mm in diameter and avoid repeated blind suction in the same area; b) Conduct comprehensive preoperative physical examinations for abdominal liposuction; c) Maintain secure bandaging for at least 3 weeks postoperatively; d) Avoid heavy physical labor and strenuous exercise for one month after surgery.
(4) Seroma – Prevention: Ensure bandaging is secure and uniform.
(5) Ecchymosis – Management: Isolated, small ecchymoses may resolve spontaneously. Extensive ecchymoses warrant vigilance for potential bleeding or hematoma formation.
(6) Surface Irregularities – Prevention: a) Employ cross-sectional liposuction techniques; b) Use cannulas ≤3mm in diameter to minimize tissue trauma.
