Located on the lower back, approximately 3.5 cun lateral to the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra in a depression. The point is typically accessed in a standing or prone position, at the intersection of the anterior superior iliac spine and the posterior midline, below the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra, 3.5 cun lateral to the posterior midline.
Is Shenshu the same as Yaoyan?
No, Shenshu and Yaoyan are two distinct acupoints.
Located 1.5 cun lateral to the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra, Shenshu belongs to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. It primarily disperses heat from the kidneys and treats conditions such as lumbago, enuresis, nocturnal emission, impotence, menstrual irregularities, and other urinary disorders, as well as tinnitus and deafness.
The Waiguan point is entirely distinct in location from the Shenshu point, though they share similarities in the conditions they treat. The Waiguan point primarily addresses lower back pain, frequent urination, irregular menstruation, and vaginal discharge.
Why does pressing the Waiguan point hurt?
The Waiguan point is an acupoint. It's normal to feel soreness, numbness, distension, or heaviness when pressing acupoints. If you confirm it's pain, there are many possible causes: excessive cold in the body, strained lower back, lumbar muscle strain, kidney deficiency and weakness, qi stagnation and blood stasis, or even urinary tract inflammation or stones. It's advisable to visit a hospital for a proper examination to determine the specific cause before undergoing appropriate treatment.
How to Self-Massage the Waist Area
1. Kneading the Waist: Make fists with both hands. Use the knuckles of your thumbs to firmly press into the Waist Area points. Rotate and apply pressure 30–50 times, aiming for a sensation of soreness and fullness.
2. Rubbing the Waist: Press the bases of both palms firmly against the waist. Rub vigorously up and down with quick, forceful movements until warmth develops.
3. Pinching the lumbar muscles: Use the thumbs and index fingers of both hands to simultaneously pinch the iliocostalis lumborum muscles on either side of the spine.
What Do Waist Indentations Indicate in Men?
Waist indentations are located on either side of the spine in the lower back, corresponding to the kidneys. They are often visible on the male body surface. These indentations are typically caused by spinal movement and muscle distribution, appearing more pronounced in individuals who exercise regularly. Generally, such indentations do not indicate any underlying issues. However, if the indentations are deep and accompanied by discomfort in the area, it is advisable to seek medical examination, as they may be caused by other factors.
