Renal cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor originating from the renal tubular epithelium, with a very high incidence rate, ranking third among urinary system tumors. Once cancer cells appear in the kidney, failure to undergo timely, scientifically standardized treatment can cause patients to miss the optimal window for intervention, posing significant risks to their health and life.
Therefore, early detection and treatment of renal cell carcinoma are particularly critical. What symptoms indicate kidney cancer?
1. Hematuria (Blood in Urine)
Approximately 70% of kidney cancer patients experience hematuria in the early stages. As the tumor within the kidney grows, it invades surrounding tissues, causing bleeding. Additionally, the tumor's own blood vessels may rupture and bleed. This allows blood to enter the urine, resulting in hematuria. The urine typically appears dark red. If bleeding is heavy, patients may pass bright red urine. This hematuria is often intermittent—it can start suddenly and stop on its own, but it may recur repeatedly. Patients experiencing hematuria usually feel no pain, making it painless hematuria.
II. Back Pain
Most patients with renal cell carcinoma experience back pain. This is primarily due to the tumor's continuous growth within the kidney, stretching the renal capsule. Additionally, the tumor compresses surrounding muscle and nerve tissues, causing significant back pain. Patients may feel discomfort in both sides of the flank, abdominal region, and lumbar area.
This pain is typically dull or aching in nature. The back pain is intermittent yet persistent. In severe cases, patients may experience pronounced colicky pain in the back, closely resembling the back pain associated with ureteral stones or kidney stones.
III. Body Swelling
Following renal malignancy, the kidneys' ability to excrete fluids and toxins rapidly declines. This leads to water and sodium retention in the body, causing generalized edema. Additionally, as the tumor grows, it obstructs venous or lymphatic drainage, resulting in widespread swelling. Edema is particularly pronounced in the legs and eyelids.
IV. Lumbar Masses
Due to the rapid growth of renal tumors, palpable masses may develop in the lumbar region or upper abdomen. These masses are often more noticeable when the patient lies on their side.If the mass is near the upper abdomen, it becomes more noticeable when the patient lies flat. It's important to note that the presence of a lumbar mass typically indicates mid-to-late stage renal cell carcinoma.
In summary, these four symptoms may appear when the kidney develops cancer. Additionally, patients may experience digestive symptoms like loss of appetite or anorexia. Some patients may also experience recurrent spikes in blood pressure. When these symptoms appear, prompt medical attention and treatment are essential. During treatment, patients should also pay attention to dietary adjustments, avoiding irritating foods, as well as high-salt, high-sugar, high-fat, and raw/cold foods. Furthermore, maintaining a positive mindset and regular schedule can provide supportive benefits for kidney cancer treatment and recovery.
