The waist is a crucial area of the human body. Without proper care, it is highly susceptible to injury. So, what are some effective traditional Chinese medicine methods for protecting the waist?
Traditional Chinese Medicine recommends 5 methods for waist protection:
1.Shoulder-Pulling Waist-Pushing Method
The patient lies prone. The practitioner stands beside the patient, using one hand to press the painful area of the waist while the other hand pulls the front of the opposite shoulder upward to its maximum extent. Both hands then simultaneously apply force to pull and push.
2. Leg-Lifting Waist-Pushing Method
The patient lies prone. The practitioner stands beside the patient, using one hand to press and apply pressure to the painful area of the waist. With the other hand, the practitioner lifts the lower limb from the front-upper side of the waist joint on the opposite side to the maximum extent possible. Both hands then simultaneously apply pressure and push.
3. Oblique Lumbar Manipulation
With the patient in a lateral recumbent position, the upper lower limb is flexed at the hip and knee joints while the lower limb is extended. The practitioner presses down on the anterior or posterior shoulder with one hand and supports the buttock or anterior superior iliac spine with the other. After rotating the patient's lumbar region to the maximum extent, both hands simultaneously apply force in opposite directions.
4. Lumbar Rotation Manipulation
Position the patient in a forward-bent sitting posture with an assistant securing their lower limbs and pelvis. The practitioner sits behind and to the side of the patient, using one thumb to press the spinous process requiring manipulation while the other hand reaches under the unaffected side's armpit to support the neck. Rotate the patient's lumbar spine from the forward-bent position toward the unaffected side.At maximum rotation, one hand forcefully manipulates the lumbar region while the other thumb simultaneously applies pressure to the spinous process.
5. Lumbar Extension Manipulation
Patient supine. The practitioner presses the painful area of the lumbar region with one hand while supporting the lower limbs from the front-upper aspect of both knees with the other. Both hands simultaneously apply force to extend and press.
Additional Lumbar Care Methods
1. Strengthen Lumbar Muscles: Activities like walking backward, yoga, and jogging effectively exercise lumbar muscles. Regular waist twists and performing the "Swallow Flying" exercise in bed before sleep are also beneficial. For office workers with prolonged sitting, incorporate periodic chest expansion exercises (keeping elbows level), backward waist bends, and upward stretches daily.
2. Seasonal warmth preservation: Menstruation and childbirth can deplete kidney qi, so women should consistently keep their lower backs warm. During postpartum confinement, wear long garments to protect the waist and prevent postpartum ailments like lower back pain.
3. Nourish kidney yin: If experiencing heavy menstrual flow, frequent cold lower back pain, or low libido, promptly nourish the kidneys. Women should focus on replenishing kidney yin to enhance resistance.Incorporate kidney-nourishing foods like goji berries, Chinese yam, longan, and walnuts into your diet. Regularly take Chinese patent medicines such as Liuwei Dihuang Pills. For those with yin deficiency and excess heat, Zhibai Dihuang Pills are suitable; those with kidney yang deficiency and lower back pain may take Jinkui Shenqi Pills. 4. Moderate Sexual Activity and Effective Contraception: Frequent abortions can damage the kidneys and lead to inflammation.
5. Moderate mattress thickness: The lumbar region has a natural curve. A moderately thick, medium-firm mattress allows the lumbar muscles to rest adequately.
6. Avoid high heels: Steer clear of excessively high heels, which increase lumbar strain. Those who stand or walk for extended periods should minimize their use. Additionally, avoid low-rise pants during menstruation and lactation.
