Polyhydramnios caused by gestational diabetes:
If you have gestational diabetes and it is not well-controlled, you may develop polyhydramnios.Approximately 10% of pregnant women with diabetes are diagnosed with polyhydramnios, typically in the third trimester. Polyhydramnios due to twins or multiples: If you are carrying twins or multiples, polyhydramnios may also occur. Cases of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome are particularly prone to polyhydramnios, where one fetus has too little amniotic fluid while the other has too much.
Fetal abnormalities causing polyhydramnios:
In rare cases, due to disease, the fetus can no longer swallow amniotic fluid despite the kidneys continuously producing urine. Causes of swallowing difficulties may include pyloric stenosis, cleft lip, cleft palate, or gastrointestinal obstruction. Some neurological disorders can also interfere with swallowing, such as neural tube defects or hydrocephalus;
Fetal anemia causing polyhydramnios:
In even rarer instances, polyhydramnios may signal severe fetal anemia due to conditions like Rh incompatibility or infections such as rubella. Both situations can be treated with intrauterine transfusions. In cases of rubella, the baby may recover without intervention.
