What is the process of amniocentesis? As is widely known, amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic procedure primarily conducted to assess fetal development and other factors. However, many expectant mothers feel apprehensive about this procedure, fearing potential harm to the fetus. Below, we provide a detailed explanation of the amniocentesis process to help alleviate these concerns.Experts emphasize that amniocentesis is a highly safe prenatal test, with risks to the fetus generally not exceeding 1%. The procedure involves the following key steps:
1. Pregnant women with indications undergo an ultrasound first to determine placental location and fetal condition, avoiding accidental placental injury.If an ultrasound is unavailable, palpation can be used to locate areas with a large, sac-like sensation and easily palpable fetal movement, also helping to avoid the placenta. 2. After selecting the insertion point, the skin is disinfected, a sterile drape is applied, and local anesthesia is administered. A spinal needle with a needle core is then inserted vertically at the selected point. 3. As the needle passes through the abdominal wall and uterine wall, two "hollow" sensations may be felt. The needle core is then removed.
4. Aspirate 2 mL of amniotic fluid using a 2 mL syringe and discard it, as this initial fluid may contain maternal cells;
5. Use a 20 mL empty syringe to aspirate 20 mL of amniotic fluid. Distribute the sample into two sterile test tubes and cap them;
6. Remove the needle, cover the puncture site with sterile gauze, and apply pressure for 2-3 minutes. The patient should rest in bed for 2 hours.
7. Centrifuge the collected amniotic fluid for 5-10 minutes. Use the supernatant for biochemical testing, and the sediment for cell culture or DNA extraction.
For older mothers, who are considered high-risk pregnancies, amniocentesis is a crucial examination to ensure normal fetal development. Experts therefore recommend this procedure for pregnant women.
