Causes of Premature Rupture of Membranes

Before delivery, amniotic fluid rupture is common. However, if premature rupture occurs, do not panic—seek immediate medical attention. What causes amniotic fluid to rupture?
I. Sexual activity
During late pregnancy, increased uterine sensitivity makes external stimuli (such as mechanical pressure from intercourse) more likely to trigger contractions. Prostaglandins in semen can stimulate uterine contractions.During intercourse, abdominal compression or impact may increase pressure within the amniotic cavity. These combined factors can rupture the membranes. Engaging in playful activities involving nipple stimulation during intercourse may further contribute to premature rupture. Sexual activity in late pregnancy is a significant cause of premature rupture of membranes, warranting attention from expectant parents.
II. Caused by Nutritional Imbalances
A diet lacking in vitamin C and trace elements like copper and zinc can make the amniotic membranes brittle and less elastic, increasing the risk of premature rupture. Pregnant women should regularly consume foods rich in vitamin C, such as fresh vegetables including Chinese cabbage, chives, spinach, green peppers, cucumbers, cauliflower, bok choy, and broccoli.Fruits rich in vitamin C include fresh jujubes, kiwis, hawthorn, pomelos, strawberries, oranges, grapefruits, and lemons. Commonly consumed fruits like apples, pears, peaches, apricots, bananas, and grapes contain lower levels of vitamin C.
III. Excessive Amniotic Cavity Pressure
Pregnant women carrying multiple fetuses or experiencing polyhydramnios are prone to premature rupture of membranes due to elevated pressure within the amniotic cavity. Cases involving breech presentation, transverse lie, narrow pelvis, or cephalopelvic disproportion may also lead to premature rupture due to uneven pressure distribution within the amniotic cavity.Additionally, abnormal fetal membrane development—such as chorioamnionitis—can elevate amniotic cavity pressure and trigger premature rupture of membranes.Pathogens causing membrane infection are complex, including bacteria, mycoplasma, and chlamydia. Mycoplasma and chlamydia infections often lack obvious symptoms, making them difficult for pregnant women to detect. Sexual activity in late pregnancy can also cause genital tract infections, triggering premature rupture of membranes before delivery and potentially leading to postpartum infections. Therefore, sexual activity should be avoided in late pregnancy to prevent genital tract infections and ensure maternal and fetal safety.
V. Other Factors
Cervical incompetence in pregnant women can irritate the membranes, triggering premature rupture of membranes. Additionally, factors like severe coughing, sudden laughter, intense anger, constipation, and lifting heavy objects can cause a sudden increase in abdominal pressure, also potentially inducing premature rupture of membranes.
