The meta-analysis revealed that compared to non-runners, runners experienced a 27% lower risk of all-cause mortality, a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, and a 23% lower risk of cancer mortality.
Crucially, the research also revealed no clear dose-response trend between running frequency and mortality. This means any amount of running appears to significantly lower mortality risk. Even the smallest running doses identified in existing studies—such as running once a week, or just 50 minutes weekly at speeds below 9.6 km/h (30 mph) and energy expenditure under 500 MET-min/week—seem to improve health and extend lifespan.
