Gaining weight while losing brain volume? A recent study from Loughborough University in the UK indicates that obese individuals begin experiencing brain tissue shrinkage by middle age, particularly when excess abdominal fat is present.
Researchers analyzed 9,652 volunteers with an average age of 55.Nineteen percent of participants were overweight or obese. Analysis revealed that obese participants consistently showed smaller gray matter volumes compared to those of normal weight. This reduction occurred across several brain regions, including areas controlling behavior and movement.
Lead researcher Mark Hammer noted that brain atrophy often accompanies symptoms like memory loss, diminished cognitive function, emotional detachment, and language difficulties. Obesity may cause brain shrinkage by triggering conditions like hypertension and type 2 diabetes, which damage the heart and blood vessels, thereby impairing blood flow to the brain.Additionally, excess fat itself exerts detrimental effects. Hormones and metabolic byproducts released by adipose tissue threaten brain health.
Healthy Weight Loss Requires Exercise, Diet, and Perseverance
As the saying goes, "If you don't lose weight in March, you'll regret it in April." This season of blossoming flowers and warming weather is the perfect time to shed pounds.
Dietary Control
"Three parts exercise, seven parts diet"—successful weight loss requires both physical activity and mindful eating. However, some resort to extreme methods like skipping breakfast or dinner, or even going days without eating. Experts caution that "dieting" does not equate to "starvation." Smart weight loss involves maintaining balanced and healthy eating habits.
Reduce oil, salt, and sugar intake. Eat three meals a day at regular times, opting for whole grains, lean meats in moderation paired with vegetables. Aim for 70-80% fullness at each meal. Avoid sugary drinks, coffee, and alcohol; plain water and fruits are the best weight-loss supplements.
Adhere to the 5-3-1 Exercise Rule
Exercise is essential for weight loss. Many fitness enthusiasts know the "5-3-1" rule: exercise 5 times a week for 30 minutes each session, maintaining a minimum heart rate of 110 beats per minute. Some sweat it out at the gym, others work diligently at home with fitness apps, while some run and jump outdoors—all with one goal: shed excess weight.
Catch the Optimal Fat-Burning Window for Exercise
7:30–8:00 AM
During this morning window, the energy required for exercise comes from the breakdown and oxidation of stored body fat. This helps reduce accumulated fat deposits, making it an ideal time for exercise-based weight loss.
However, since bodily functions may not yet be fully restored at this hour—especially for those who exercise on an empty stomach—excessive intensity or duration can lead to symptoms like hypoglycemia. Therefore, avoid vigorous high-intensity workouts during this time. Opt instead for low-impact activities such as brisk walking, light jogging, or Tai Chi.
Afternoon 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
This period is ideal for strength training, as muscle endurance is approximately 50% higher than at other times. Additionally, daytime temperatures are generally higher during this window, raising body temperature and increasing flexibility, which reduces the risk of injury during exercise.Consider strength training to build muscle or stretching exercises like yoga and Pilates.
Evening 5:00 PM–7:00 PM
This period represents the optimal time for exercise, as physical endurance and oxygen uptake reach their peak. Blood pressure and heart rate increase.Additionally, evening hours align with optimal regulation of hormones and enzymes within the body, while sensory functions like vision, touch, and smell are at their peak. Thus, exercising during this time offers greater health benefits. Higher-intensity workouts are suitable during this period, but note that it's best to rest for one hour after exercise before eating.
8:00 PM–10:00 PM
This period is suitable for low-intensity exercise, which aids weight loss and promotes sleep. However, avoid prolonged or overly strenuous workouts, as these may disrupt sleep. Ideally, finish exercising one hour before bedtime.
