Eye bags result from laxity in the lower eyelid skin and subcutaneous tissue, significantly impacting appearance by creating a tired, aged look. Some individuals opt for eye bag removal surgery to address this. Though classified as a minor procedure, it carries inherent risks.
What adverse reactions can occur with eye bag correction?
Adverse Reaction 1: Lower Eyelid Eversion
Older individuals undergoing eye bag correction are prone to lower eyelid eversion due to significantly reduced tension in the orbicularis oculi muscle. Excessive removal of skin tissue or orbicularis muscle can cause this issue.Additionally, using the muscle-skin flap method to remove eye bags at small clinics can also cause lower eyelid ectropion.
Adverse Reaction 2: Significant Hematoma
Incomplete hemostasis during surgery or failure to apply compressive bandaging promptly after surgery can lead to hematoma and bruising. Small hematomas and mild bruising are generally not cause for excessive concern, as they typically resolve on their own within about a week. However, extensive hematomas or bruising require prompt medical intervention. A surgical incision should be made to explore the area, identify the bleeding site, and perform suturing and ligation. Careful selection of the incision site is crucial to minimize scarring.
Adverse Reaction 3: Lower Orbital Depression
Lower orbital depression occurs when excessive orbital fat is removed.Additionally, horizontal hollows may appear when the orbicularis oculi muscle is pulled outward over too narrow an area. Before cosmetic surgery, it is crucial to accurately assess the amount of tissue and fat requiring removal. If significant hollows under the eyelids are observed during surgery, a portion of the removed fat should be promptly grafted back into the orbital septum. Should lower eyelid hollows develop post-surgery, autologous fat injection can be used for filling.
Adverse Effect 4: Bilateral Asymmetry
Asymmetry may occur if tissue removal is identical for eyes of unequal size, or if fat/tissue removal differs for eyes of equal size. Preoperative calibration of eye size and precise fat/tissue removal volume is essential.
Adverse Reaction 5: Prominent Scarring
Prominent scarring may occur if the incision is designed too far from the eyelid margin or if sutures are too loose. The preoperative incision line must not exceed 2 millimeters from the lower eyelid margin. During surgery, strict adherence to the planned incision line is crucial—neither too tight nor too loose. Postoperatively, apply scar patches under medical guidance to prevent hypertrophic scarring. If significant scarring persists, consider laser resurfacing six months after eyelid surgery to mitigate its appearance.
Important Reminder
Eyelid bag revision carries risks, so choose a reputable hospital for treatment. Post-revision care must strictly follow the doctor's instructions, avoiding spicy or irritating foods during recovery.
