Prolonged computer use or late nights often lead to eye fatigue and dryness—a common struggle for office workers. Opening your computer each day may cause a tight, uncomfortable sensation, as if something is covering your eyes. Over time, this can even feel like your vision is deteriorating. This issue shouldn't be underestimated. Today, I'll share how to protect your eyes in such situations.
1. Maintain proper posture and keep an appropriate distance and height from your computer screen.
Good office posture is crucial, ensuring the right distance and height between your computer and eyes directly impacts eye safety and hygiene. Generally, position your monitor slightly below eye level at a comfortable angle, ideally about 60 centimeters away.I often see people placing their monitors slightly to the left front, which easily causes eye strain. Many also lean forward over their computers, getting very close to the screen—both habits significantly increase eye damage.
2. When feeling tired, look out the window or into the distance to rest your eyes.
Generally, after about an hour of computer use, take a break. If your eyes feel fatigued, rest immediately.Since we work at such close range, the best way to rest and refresh your eyes is to look into the distance. Step outside your window, or better yet, go to the balcony to gaze at distant scenery. Focusing on greenery helps alleviate eye fatigue and rejuvenate your vision. This also gives your brain a well-deserved break—after all, those who know how to rest are the ones who truly work.
3. Avoid using your computer in direct sunlight reflecting off the screen or in dim lighting.
Many modern office buildings have suboptimal lighting, relying on artificial light all day. Sometimes lights are forgotten, causing the monitor to appear excessively bright and causing significant eye strain. Some work near windows with full-length glass walls, where glare—or even direct sunlight reflecting off the screen—makes it nearly impossible to keep eyes open. Don't underestimate this; it causes significant eye damage. 4. If your eyes feel dry, blink frequently or use lubricating eye drops.
When you feel dryness, consciously blink more often to stimulate natural tear production. For severe dryness, use lubricating eye drops sparingly—overuse can lead to dependency.
5. Use a large cup of hot water to steam your eyes, moisturizing the surrounding skin and boosting blood circulation.
When drinking water, opt for a cup of hot water. Let its steam moisturize your eyes and surrounding skin while stimulating blood flow around the eyes. This promotes metabolism. Combined with gentle self-massage, it effectively relieves dryness and fatigue.
6. Pay attention to your diet and consume foods rich in vitamins.
For those who experience dry, tired eyes from prolonged computer use, slight adjustments to your daily diet can be beneficial. Focus on eating foods rich in vitamins, as these are excellent for eye health. Examples include various green vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and carrots—rather than relying solely on greasy, meat-heavy dishes.
