Frequent Blinking
When your eyes are swollen from crying, causing your double eyelids to appear puffy and thick, try blinking frequently. This not only soothes the swollen eyelids but also gradually defines the eyelid creases with repeated blinking, making the swelling less noticeable.
Alternating Hot and Cold Compresses
Dip a towel in hot water and place it over your eyes—ensuring it's not too hot for your skin. Re-wet it if it cools down, repeating this cycle several times. Follow with a cold compress for a while. This leverages the principle of thermal expansion and contraction to help reduce eye swelling.
Metal Spoon Ice Pack
If alternating compresses seem cumbersome, freeze a metal spoon in the freezer beforehand. After several hours, apply it to your eyes, moving from the inner corners toward the temples. This soothes puffiness caused by crying.Use the index and middle fingers of both hands to massage the upper and lower eyelids repeatedly from the inner corners toward the temples. This technique is highly effective for reducing puffiness.
Egg Compress
Eggs are known to reduce bruising and swelling, and they work similarly for puffy eyes from crying. For best results, apply a warm compress using a boiled egg. If it cools, reheat it and continue applying.
Sleep on Your Back
If you're worried about waking up with puffy eyes after crying, avoid sleeping on your side that night. Always sleep on your back, as side sleeping can worsen puffiness. Using a high pillow while sleeping is even better, as it helps prevent fluid buildup around the eyes.
Steam your eyes
Pour a cup of hot water (be careful not to burn yourself), then lean close to the steam. Close your eyes and let the steam gently envelop them—it should feel warm, not scalding. This promotes blood circulation and helps draw out excess fluid from the puffiness, reducing swelling quickly.
Camouflage with Eye Makeup
What if you're rushing out and don't have time for puffy eyes to subside? Use eye makeup to conceal them. Since crying causes puffiness and dark circles, choose two darker eyeshadow shades. Apply them with a gradient effect to minimize the appearance of puffiness and make your eyes look smaller.Pair this with a lighter shade of eyeshadow along the lower lash line, creating a contrast between the upper and lower lids. Common Remedies Here are a few popular methods I haven't personally tried, but you might want to experiment with: applying tea bags to your eyes, using ice packs or ice cubes, or applying milk compresses.
