The skin of the eyelids is approximately 0.4 millimeters thick, making it the thinnest skin on the entire body. It is soft, delicate, and highly elastic. However, factors such as aging, inflammation, and edema can cause the eye area to exhibit signs of aging and functional decline.Loose eyelid skin not only affects facial aesthetics but also compromises eyelid function. So, how can we address this issue?
It is understood that to prevent overly noticeable scars after surgery, which could affect appearance, incisions for eyelid skin tightening should be made as parallel as possible to the skin's natural creases.Common methods for correcting eyelid skin laxity include: 1. Simple Double Eyelid Skin Removal This procedure removes excess lax skin while creating double eyelids. While commonly used in the past, it involves prolonged swelling and slow recovery, with natural-looking double eyelids typically appearing only after six months. It is now rarely used for middle-aged and elderly patients.
2. Blepharoplasty via Upper Eyelid Margin Incision
Primarily for elderly patients who prefer minimal alteration and do not require double eyelids. Excess skin is removed solely through an incision along the upper eyelid margin.
3. Brow Lift or Brow Resection Surgery
Improves symptoms by elevating lax upper eyelid skin through brow lift or brow resection procedures.Incisions are placed at the mid-brow, upper brow margin, or lower brow margin based on the patient's brow-to-eye distance. Combining this with forehead and temporal wrinkle reduction surgery can further enhance anti-aging results.
Editor's Note: Regardless of the cause, sagging upper eyelids require timely correction. Please note: Upper eyelid surgery should not be performed simultaneously with lower eyelid surgery.
