Protruding eyes, also known as exophthalmos, refer to an abnormal condition where the eyeball shifts forward and bulges outward. The normal position of the eyeball within the eye socket is such that the apex of the cornea does not extend beyond the upper or lower rim of the socket. A difference in protrusion between both eyes should generally not exceed 2mm; otherwise, pathological exophthalmos should be considered.Protruding eyeballs, often caused by various factors, can negatively impact facial appearance and overall aesthetics. Correction is essential, and eyebrow correction surgery can effectively address this issue.
Eyeball protrusion occurs when the eyeball extends beyond the normal range. It may indicate an eye condition or be a symptom of a systemic illness. It can be unilateral or bilateral. Eyeball correction surgery can resolve this condition. Causes of eyeball protrusion: 1. 2. Arteriovenous malformations in the internal carotid artery or cavernous sinus may cause pulsatile proptosis accompanied by a bruit.
3. Unilateral high myopia or meningioma can both result in unilateral proptosis.
Proptosis is further classified into true and false types. False proptosis primarily results from ocular enlargement due to intraocular conditions, such as corneal grape-like swelling, axial high myopia, and congenital glaucoma.
True proptosis, based on etiology, can be categorized into inflammatory, endocrine, vascular, neoplastic, traumatic, and the rare parasitic types.Treatment for proptosis depends on its etiology. For treating aneurysms, ligation of the affected common carotid artery is indicated.
Methods for correcting proptosis:
1. Increasing orbital volume: Destroy bone fragments on all sides of the orbit, allowing surrounding fat tissue to protrude into the created space, thereby achieving a retraction effect. This surgical approach is suitable for severe cases of proptosis.
2. Reducing orbital contents: Primarily suitable for patients with less severe proptosis. During upper eyelid or lower eyelid bag correction surgery, deep orbital fat is minimized. This enlarges the internal orbital space, allowing the eyeball to freely move inward and naturally retract.
