How to Perform a Saline Nasal Rinse
1. Choose the Right Salt
Use only saline solution made with specialized nasal rinse salt or sterile saline. Never substitute regular table salt. Most table salts today contain iodine, which is unsuitable for nasal use. The nasal cavity has a dense network of capillaries, making improper use potentially harmful.Therefore, be mindful when selecting salt. Opt for specialized nasal irrigation salt or non-iodized table salt.
2. Avoid Using Tap Water Directly
The water used to prepare the saline solution must be purified water or tap water that has been boiled and cooled. Never use tap water directly. Tap water may contain bacteria that could infect the nasal passages. Additionally, tap water often contains additives that can irritate the nasal lining.Using tap water will generally worsen rhinitis symptoms, so be sure to avoid it. Additionally, the water temperature should not be too hot or too cold; around 37°C (98.6°F), close to body temperature, is ideal.
3. Prepare the nasal saline solution correctly
The concentration of saline solution is 0.9%. When preparing it, you should also adjust it to this concentration. Generally, mix 2.75 grams of nasal saline with 250ml of water. The concentration should not be too high or too low.0.9% saline solution is optimal for ciliary movement; concentrations that are too low or too high will not achieve the best results. 4. Opt for a dedicated nasal irrigation device

These devices are easy to operate, provide a more comfortable rinsing experience, and deliver noticeable results.
5. Flush carefully to avoid water aspiration
(1) Preparation: For flushing the right nostril, lean your body slightly forward and tilt your head to the left.
(2) During flushing: Keep your mouth open and breathe gently and slowly. Insert the olive-shaped tip into one nostril, allowing the water to flow into the left nasal cavity. Repeat as needed.Repeat the same method for the other nostril.
Additionally, it's best to rinse the nasal vestibule first before moving to the deeper nasal passages. Direct rinsing can push debris from the vestibule into the posterior nasal cavity, effectively flushing trapped particles further inward.
(3) Do not breathe through your nostrils during rinsing. After finishing, gently tilt your head in various directions to allow any saline solution that may have entered the sinuses to drain out.
6. Moderate the frequency of rinsing
More rinses aren't necessarily better. Rinse 1-2 times daily based on personal needs, ideally after work during your evening shower. Individuals with nasal conditions exposed to high dust levels in their work environment—such as carpenters, metalworkers, plasterers, chefs, tailors, or barbers—may rinse an additional time daily.Excessive rinsing may strip away normal mucosal secretions, compromising the protective barrier of the nasal lining.
