Tooth loss is becoming increasingly prevalent, causing significant inconvenience in daily life. Teeth serve as another form of personal presentation; possessing healthy, aligned, and bright teeth enables confidence in any situation. So, what causes tooth loss? Let's explore expert insights.
What causes tooth loss? It primarily relates to the following factors.
1. Tooth damage due to dental caries. When tooth decay progresses from superficial to deep damage, untreated hard tissue destruction can lead to pulpitis or apical periodontitis. This causes crown loss, leaving only a stump or root fragment. If an apical abscess forms, the affected tooth may become loose, sensitive to touch, and ultimately require extraction due to irreparable damage.
2. Damage caused by jawbone conditions such as osteomyelitis or tumors. These conditions can lead to uneven wear, resulting in tooth fractures that may sometimes require extraction.
3. Tooth loss due to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease causes progressive destruction of supporting tissues, deepening of the gingival sulcus, formation of periodontal pockets, alveolar bone resorption, tooth mobility, and eventual tooth loss or extraction.
4. Traumatic tooth loss. Both anterior and posterior teeth may fracture or become dislodged due to injury. Severe trauma may also involve defects in the jawbone, alveolar bone, or soft tissues.
