With advancements in orthodontic technology, correcting misaligned teeth, protruding teeth, and canine teeth is no longer difficult. However, many beauty-conscious individuals often worry: Could orthodontic treatment damage our teeth? What risks does it pose?
1. Impact on Dental Pulp: During the initial treatment phase, mild, temporary inflammation may occur within the dental pulp. This manifests as pain or discomfort in the first few days after force application. However, studies confirm this effect is generally minor.
2. Loosening Teeth: Some cite tooth mobility as a risk of orthodontic treatment. In reality, each tooth possesses natural physiological mobility to absorb chewing forces and prevent trauma.
During treatment, increased tooth mobility is a normal physiological response.
Tooth movement requires remodeling of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament, as teeth are anchored in the alveolar bone by the periodontal ligament. This process can cause temporary tooth mobility.
Therefore, if excessive tooth mobility is clinically detected, force application should be paused to allow recovery before resuming treatment.
III. Impact on Alveolar Bone Height: A slight reduction in alveolar bone height may occur. This is due to the difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene while wearing orthodontic appliances, increasing the risk of gingivitis.
While this affects the alveolar bone, bone resorption ceases after treatment completion. With good oral hygiene, the alveolar bone will gradually return to normal.
All diseases develop gradually within the body. Therefore, it is crucial to seek timely examination and treatment when possible—early detection, early assessment, and early intervention are key.
However, once teeth reach their intended positions and cease movement, they can stabilize through the periodontal ligament's natural reattachment process, preventing permanent damage.
