In this era of beauty consciousness, dental correction has gained widespread acceptance and popularity among those seeking aesthetic enhancement. Annually, approximately 600,000 to 700,000 individuals undergo orthodontic treatment. This method primarily applies controlled pressure to teeth, triggering gradual resorption and allowing existing teeth to shift slowly within the bone structure until they stabilize in their final positions. However, did you know that orthodontic treatment also varies between genders?
Age-wise, around 12 years old is optimal for orthodontic treatment. By this stage, the dental arch is largely developed, most baby teeth have been replaced by permanent teeth, and the roots of these permanent teeth are mostly fully formed. The bite relationship between upper and lower teeth has also stabilized. Age 12 coincides with adolescence, a period of rapid growth and development in the jaw and facial structure.Orthodontic treatment must leverage this growth potential to maximize efficiency in tooth movement and alveolar bone remodeling, achieving optimal results.
Girls typically enter puberty earlier, so the ideal age for treatment is generally 10–12 years old. For boys, the optimal window is 11–13 years old. However, certain dental malocclusions like underbite ("reverse overbite") or lip-biting require treatment between ages 3–5. Other malocclusions are best addressed when permanent teeth begin erupting, typically around ages 8–10.
Many perceive orthodontic treatment as a time-consuming, labor-intensive, and uncomfortable "systemic project." However, adhering to the following principles can significantly enhance efficiency:
Consistently wear retainers. Failure to wear retainers after orthodontic treatment results in a 100% relapse rate. Retainers should be worn 24 hours a day during the first year post-treatment; 12 hours daily during the second year;and gradually reduce wearing time thereafter.
Ensure thorough brushing. Poor oral hygiene while wearing braces can lead to cavities or gum inflammation. Brush after every meal using a small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush for at least 5 minutes per session.
Be mindful of eating habits.During the initial days of wearing braces, patients may experience discomfort. Normal eating habits typically resume after about one week. Throughout treatment, dietary restrictions apply: minimize sticky or hard foods. Even apples should be cut into small pieces and chewed thoroughly. Improper eating habits can loosen braces and compromise treatment outcomes.
