"Toothache isn't a disease, but when it strikes, it's truly agonizing." This saying has circulated for ages, and most of us have experienced tooth pain—it's excruciating, disrupting both eating and sleeping. So what causes toothaches? Are there effective treatments? Let's explore below!
Causes of Toothache
Toothache ranks among the most common oral health issues, stemming from various conditions including:Certain neurological conditions like trigeminal neuralgia or peripheral facial neuritis; chronic systemic diseases such as pulp congestion in hypertensive patients or pulp vascular inflammation/necrosis in diabetics can also contribute. 1. Tooth Decay (Cavities): Primarily manifests as stimulus-induced pain, such as sensitivity to hot or cold.
II. Inflammation of the Dental Nerve: Tooth decay, commonly known as cavities, or trauma can damage the dental nerve, leading to acute pulpitis and severe pain. The saying "Toothache isn't an illness, but when it strikes, it feels like death" aptly describes this type of pain.
IV. Inflammation of periodontal tissues: Periodontal disease develops when plaque and tartar accumulate between teeth and gums over time. It can sometimes flare up acutely due to weakened immunity, forming an acute periodontal abscess.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment Methods
1. Topical application of Yaxuan Powder: Primarily composed of talc, licorice, realgar, borneol, and cinnabar. Dip a toothbrush in the powder and brush the affected area twice daily, morning and evening. Alternatively, mix 30g of the powder with 60g of raw honey, apply to the affected area, and repeat twice daily. This formula clears heat, detoxifies, reduces swelling, alleviates pain, promotes tissue regeneration, and stops bleeding. It is highly effective for common symptoms such as toothache due to real fire, toothache due to deficient fire, toothache from dental caries, and conditions like periodontitis.
2. Oral Administration: Rehmannia glutinosa (raw) 12g, Forsythia suspensa 12g, Moutan bark 10g, Cimicifuga root 10g, Angelica sinensis 10g, Rheum palmatum 10g, Coptis chinensis 6g, Bamboo leaf 6g, Gypsum fibrosum (raw) 30g (decoct first), Trichosanthes root 15g. One dose daily. Decoct in water and divide into two servings. Clears heat and relieves pain. Indicated for acute periodontitis.
3. Decoction: 30g each of cuttlefish bone and raw licorice. One dose daily, decocted to 500ml. Take 250ml before breakfast and dinner. Dispels wind and clears heat, purges fire and detoxifies, promotes blood circulation and relieves pain, astringes and stops bleeding. Mainly treats periodontitis, periodontal abscesses, and Yangming damp-heat pattern.Symptoms include swollen, painful gums with pus discharge, pain radiating to cheeks, dry mouth, fever, yellow urine, and dry stools. Proven Treatment Methods
First Proven Formula: Place 100g plain white wine in a teacup, add 10g salt, stir until dissolved, then boil on stove.Rinse the affected area with a mouthful of the solution, taking care not to swallow it. Toothache will cease immediately.
Second remedy: Dissolve MSG in warm water at a 1:50 ratio. Rinse the mouth with the solution briefly before spitting it out. Repeat several times. Persist for two days, and the toothache will subside.
Third remedy: When experiencing toothache, bite down on a small slice of fresh ginger at the painful spot. Repeat as needed; it can even be kept in the mouth overnight. This is a safe and reliable remedy.
Traditional Chinese medicine attributes toothache to either excess heat (shí huǒ) or deficiency heat (xū huǒ) rising within the body. Excess heat causes short-lived, intense pain, while deficiency heat leads to prolonged, dull pain accompanied by loose teeth.
Treatment for Excess Heat Toothache
(1) Mash one bitter melon into a paste, mix with sugar, strain the liquid after two hours, and drink cold. Repeat three times. (2) Boil fresh chicken blood and consume hot. Treatment for Deficiency Heat Toothache
(3) Cook lily bulbs, lotus seeds, and rice into porridge. Eat after cooling.Once daily.
(4) Decoct water chestnuts, raw lotus root, and fresh茅根 (Mao Gen), drink the liquid several times daily.
(5) Cook 100g raw rehmannia root with rice into porridge. Add sugar to taste after cooking, consume cold.
Conclusion: Toothache is essentially an external manifestation of dental disease. True toothache stems from conditions like cavities—caused by dental plaque or bacteria—or periodontitis—triggered by internal bodily heat. Thus, timely treatment and prevention of dental diseases are crucial.
