When do bayberries ripen?
Bayberries typically ripen in May. Harvesting usually occurs around the Dragon Boat Festival. In lower-altitude, warmer regions, they mature earlier, while higher elevations see later ripening. In mountainous areas above 1,000 meters, ripening is relatively late—sometimes extending into the latter part of the fifth lunar month, and occasionally into the sixth lunar month.
Nutritional Value of Bayberries
Bayberries promote saliva production, quench thirst, strengthen the spleen, and stimulate appetite. Consuming them in moderation not only avoids harming the spleen and stomach but also detoxifies and dispels cold. The Compendium of Materia Medica records that bayberries alleviate thirst, harmonize the five internal organs, cleanse the intestines and stomach, and eliminate irritability and foul odors. The fruit, seeds, roots, and bark of the bayberry tree are all medicinal, with a neutral nature and no toxicity. The seeds treat beriberi, the roots stop bleeding and regulate qi, and bark soaked in wine heals bruises, swelling, and pain. Bayberries steeped in white wine, consumed during midsummer, instantly refresh the spirit and relieve summer heat and greasy discomfort. For diarrhea, boiling a concentrated decoction of bayberries can stop loose stools due to its astringent properties. Bayberries possess multiple medicinal functions: aiding digestion, dispelling dampness, relieving summer heat, promoting fluid production to stop coughs, assisting digestion, warding off cold, stopping diarrhea, promoting urination, and preventing cholera. They are renowned as the agate among fruits.
