After interviewing numerous affluent cigar enthusiasts hidden across mainland China, we identified shared traits: maturity, composure, a passion for life, an appreciation for solitude, and a cherishing of friendship—their pursuit of cigars mirrors society's idealized vision of masculine qualities.
Wealthy
Men who smoke cigars in contemporary China undoubtedly belong to the affluent class. Calculating based on an average imported hand-rolled cigar costing 300 yuan, smoking three per day would amount to nearly 1,000 yuan spent on cigars daily.For those who also collect cigars, investing over 100,000 yuan in cigar humidors and matching accessories becomes essential—and this represents merely a minor hobby. Men with such pursuits typically elevate their standards for homes, vehicles, and dining experiences. After all, few would lavish excessive funds solely on smoking. This allows one to roughly estimate the wealth required for a man to enjoy cigars with true ease.
Exquisite Craftsmanship
Of course, the high price of cigars is not without reason. Every step of cigar production reflects humanity's pursuit of perfection. Each year, rainfall and temperature fluctuations in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras directly impact the quality of life for American cigar enthusiasts. Climate determines whether the finest tobacco leaves can be produced, an area where human intervention is minimal.Even when perfect tobacco is harvested, skilled labor remains an immense cost. Cigars are entirely handcrafted; machine rolling cannot enhance efficiency. Among the cigar enthusiasts we interviewed, most cherish moments of solitary enjoyment with their cigars.Unlike cigarettes, cigars aren't simply lit and discarded after smoking. Savoring a fine cigar involves cutting the cap, using a specialized lighter, and embracing a strong sense of ritual before indulging. This ritual gradually lifts you from mundane daily concerns, returning you to a state of complete comfort and relaxation.The smoking process demands neither haste nor slowness; a medium-length cigar typically requires an hour to savor fully.
Growth
Those unfamiliar with cigars may not realize they are essentially "living" entities. Upon leaving the factory, they have merely taken shape. Fresh cigars are plump and resilient—even if flattened, they spring back to their original form.Yet at this stage, they are unsuitable for smoking—still immature, like a child. From the factory to distributors, retailers, and finally into the smoker's hands, the cigar continues to ferment and mature. It requires precise temperature and humidity to develop perfectly. Any mishandling during this logistics process can spell disaster for a high-quality cigar.Most Chinese cigar enthusiasts purchase directly from Europe and America precisely because many domestic distributors lack the knowledge to properly care for cigars, squandering these treasures.Even when a cigar safely reaches an experienced aficionado, it's rarely smoked immediately. Instead, it undergoes personal care, resting undisturbed for 3-5 years until it exhibits a plump body, lustrous color, and rich aroma. Only then is it taken out for enjoyment—at this point, the cigar is truly matured.
Maturity
Among all the cigar enthusiasts we've interviewed, one common trait stands out most prominently—maturity.Most began smoking in their teens, yet none of the boys who tried cigars out of curiosity found it a pleasant experience: they couldn't handle the thick, finger-sized object with ease, and the intense burning sensation made a second one unthinkable. Only mature men with sufficient life experience and resilient character choose cigars.
